I went and picked up this 87 Big Red http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=90667
Was supposed to be a 4 1/2-5 hour trip one way that turned into a 7hr trip.
The sleet, snow and freezing rain made it slow going not to mention all the idiots that were wrecking. I must have seen a dozen cars off the road or into the gaurd rails.
I'm about to go unload it and check it out and take it for a little ride.
Where can I get the heat sheild, tail light and a mud flap for it?

So I checked it over and I believe it needs a little tune-up. It flooded itself when I went to start it with the choke, it was 28 degrees outside so I thought it would need it. So anyway had to pull the plug and clean it. Then I got it running. It runs ok but after I added some fresh gas it seemed to wanna idle faster and faster the longer it ran. So I plan on tearing the carb off and cleaning it and getting a new spark plug.
All the gears work good. Checked the oil, looked clean like it was just changed. The diff oil looked not so good, looked like some water in it. I will change that before I ride it again. All the lights and brakes work and the cables seem to all operate smooth.

When something doesn't run just because of sitting I consider that running. lol

it's s 20+ yr old trike. that's the closest to mint trike you will find now days. your crying over a "couple" of cosmetic things when the trike itself is near mint and looks like it rolled off a show room? dude, please your truly insulting the seller and the buyer here. your comments are NOT warranted not wanted when you act like this. That's just a jerk responce....

hey sweet glad soemone picked it up. If i had the $ myself I woudl have purchased it w/o any problems. With the $ i have sunk into my trikes here I don;t have the extra for one that nice. enjoy it and take care of it. also don't forget to look at the air filter and check the wiring for nicks or cracks. you don't want to either loose an important electrical part or get stuck 3 miles from home in the snow due to a chafed wire.

The seller sent me close up pics of it and I had asked alot of questions about it. It is far from mint. And I told the seller straight up what I had though about it. He didn't seem insulted. As a matter of fact I opened his eyes some. How do you know the seller was insulted? Were you in contact with the seller? Was he insulted? Do you know the seller? Now I'm just curious. I was going to deal with him but it fell through. Thats how I look at a ATC that the seller wanted $2000.00 for. A bit over priced. If the seller took far less now that would be a good deal. But my comments, for the most part, would still be the same. And I would have bought it too. I don't believe my comments are insulting. You aint heard nuthin yet! BTW Just because it's Hanuka eve is no reason to get snippy.

Well to answer a few questions it did run when I went to pick it up. He hit the start and it fired right off. All the wiring is intact and in very good condition. The air filter is also in very good condition, it has some oil on it yet but I am gonna clean it anyway and re-oil it. The rust is very minimal and is slightly exaggerated in the photos. I do believe it is very close to being mint myself, I think if I would clean it thouroughly it will look great, if I pull the racks off and paint them it would look very close to mint. I mean it looks good now and I am very happy with it.
I think a $11 taillight lense and a $24 mudflap would not make someone say its far from mint.
Anyway I am ready to ride it in the snow. My riding buddy that always bashes on my 3-wheelers actually likes it. Thats says alot, because all he buys are new machines and he keeps them very nice with a meticulous maintance and cleaning schedule.
As far as price I paid $1500.00 for it.

maybe it was the way it came off then. if you had pentioned some of this then i would not have felt you were attacking him. high priced? yea maybe, but it was in a near mint conidtion. there's very minor surface rust (hardly any) and the bike looks nearly new except for like $100 in cosmetic parts. no biggie to me.
anyway, peace man, no hate from me. one good thing is we all have a right to discuss and post opinions. if i can off a bit harsh, i do appologize.

What does Hanukkah Eve have to do with any of this? Do you know anything about lighting the shamash on the menorah? I highly doubt you even know what it is...Get a clue.
Fastz28 nice trike! You know have the big three from honda. She needs just a few things to be a real beauty!

1500 for an 87 BR in that condition is a fantastic deal. (especially here in PA)
Wheeliepop picked up a nice one last year. I dont remember what he payed but there arent too many trikes in that original shape around here anymore.
Great score!!!

i would give $2000 for it. There's a lot of 85 and 86 around here but i never saw a Big Red 250 87.
It is easy to find a 250 BR, but finding one with it's original fenders is getting harder. I prefert paying more for a nice one than having to put a lot of money on a beated one.
FastZ28, you got a nice BR because it's the last production's year of the best trike HONDA made.
sell it to me
sell it to me..

Thanks for the compliments guys!
I did a little work on it today, pulled the front levers off and cleaned them and greased the pivots. Installed a new plug, and tore the carb apart and cleaned it.
Drained the gas tank and cleaned the petcock. I also drained the diff flushed it out and put some fresh gear oil in it. I wanted to check the valves out but forgot to print out the intructions, doh. I was going to wash and oil the air filter but it is original and seems to be beyond saving, so I will buy a new one.
Still seems to have idle issues. I set the mixture screw 1 1/2 turns out and warmed it up and the idle still seems to climb. I adjusted the idle screw and it stayed good for a minute then climbed again. It has a 130 main jet, maybe I should try one size smaller. I will wait to do that until after I get a new air filter properly oiled and check the valves.

yea, and you and gazoo were caught in the act of melesting it last year
p.s. the main jet has nothing to do with the idle, that would be the pilot jet. you may have an intake leak. try spraying starting fluid or carb cleaner around the carb boot/manifold area. if your idle rises you have a leak.
anyway nice score! i will be pickin up an 86 next week. i cant wait!:w00t:

thats a nice clean 87, and 1500 aint bad at all. I just scored this a month ago for 900.00, but that was a deal of a life time, and ony 1 hour away, granted its "just an 85"

As to the OP's deal......
You did good.
Clean ones are hard to find.
I got my 84 200es for $75, but had to rebuild carb and I replaced the plastic tank with steel.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t221/marionmedic/ATC/DSCI0031.jpg
Runs good but need tires.
But not bad for only having about $100 in it.
Leaves some room for improvements and/or "resto".

mustang, the issue is what kind of shape is it in? if it's rusty, not running nad busted plastics, then you won't get much. if it's in mint shape, you'll get $1000+

Not a bad deal at all. Makes me feel better about mine. I paid 1K for (85 Big Red) mine. Got it about 5 minutes from where I lived. Owned by the owners late wife, with absolutely no mileage on it. Sat in a garage for the last 20 years, never seen a spec of rain. Only problem with it was a piece of black plastic trim missing from one of the fenders. Owner had it cleaned up for selling, even put a new battery in! I jumped on it.

I have just a few things to say. I happened to be the riding buddy that always bashes on my (fastz28's) 3-wheelers and buys new machines and keeps them very nice with a meticulous maintance and cleaning schedule. Fastz28 gets the thumbs up on his buy. for you 88 Turbo Coupe your out of line with that comment. It's an 1987 what do you want ! I own a 1988 kx 250 that my dad owned from new and it's hard to keep an over 20 year old off road vehicle in good condition. I give you all my respect for keeping the classics alive.
Thank You and Ride Red, Hondude450
