I've been searching the net looking for a good trail/sport quad. I found that the trx's are too expensive, Suzuki's and Kawi's are too fast(2 pinger)/ or two expensive (4 banger ) and then I found the Yami Blaster. I'm looking at older rigs, late 80' early 90's blaster's going for $700-$900 in good condition! Is this a good quad? Power? Speed? Suspension? Dependable? What's your take on them? Post whatever you know!

I think PA is just too far, it would be cheaper to get one around here (Northern Michigan) thanks though.

Do some searches on here of yamahajim also might have been blastermaster. I seen a couple videos of him doing things on his blasters that 99.9% people would say is impossible. I have rebuilt a couple nice simple machien and with a pipe have good power. In dunes your always gonna want more power but in trails I think it would be great.

I built a nice 89 blaster for my fiance' it has been hands down the most reliable machine Ive ever owned. Vitos 3mm stroker crank, kleihn 32mm carb, reeds, twin air filter, fmf pipe.

Dosnt sound like much but it ripped! she kept up with us on all our ocala rides even on the long fire roads!

It hauled my 250lbs monkey butt up countless hill climbes and other rides

besides the suspension lacking a bit I think their still one of th ebest quads ever made!

How was the suspension?

if you want to be aggressive it needs a wider and longer stance, I put a tri-z rear axle on hers and flipped yfz rims up front, made it a million times better, but the shocks are also weak, they need good units to handle anything, but a common practice is to put 400ex shocks on it or ltz400 shocks for a cheap fix.

I'd look for a 400EX. Much, much better bike. I think of a Blaster as a kids bike. And the 400s are getting CHEAP. I bought an 03 last year with lots of extras for $1500. My buddy just bought an 02 for $1450. And I had another friend that just got a 1999 for $850 but it smoked. My brother put rings in it for cheap. I think he bought a battery and a few other things and has like $1200 in it now. That's not far from the price range you were looking and it's for a million times better bike.

Anyone got a pic of a blaster next to the warrior?

I wouldn't even consider a warrior! The warrior was a great machine back when they first came out but don't compare to much these days. The blaster is a great machine. You can get them cheap as heck, they are very reliable, and parts are super cheap. Back in 2000 i watched a guy get laughed at when he showed up to race at the silverdome for the amature championships on his blaster. He beat everyone there and was the one laughing as he took the trophy home. Of course it wasn't stock by any means but it just goes to show that the possibilities are endless for these budget machines.

On the other hand a 400ex would also be a great choice and maybe a better one. They are bullet proof. They have a lot more room to stretch out on. The blaster is quite a small machine. You can find a 400ex pretty cheap especially these days. My buddy just picked up one for a grand that was really nice with lots of extras on it. I think that you would be much happier with the 400ex but the blaster is a good budget quad.

Anyone got any comparison photo? (Blaster next to ?) It looks kinda small, but then in the specs it's only 4 inches shorter than the Warrior!?

SYKO

no photo but Im 6'1 250lbs and felt just fine on the blaster, since its so short its one of the fastest turning atvs ive ever been on, like a trike it can turn nearly on itself.

Honda 250X!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best damn small model sport quad ever built.
Same thing as the 300ex without electric start. But it does have reverse.
They made them from 87- 88 to 91 -92..
You can find them MINT for about a grand.
Parts are everywhere.the 91 and 92's would be better to get. They had stronger trannies in them. But the 87 -88 had no real issues, unless the were beat on badly.

A 400ex would be good, but far out of your price range, and no reverse
The blaster.......Ehhhhh They are what they are. They are tiny. Next to a 300ex (if you have been around them) They are even smaller than that.
I aint bashing them, but eventually in stock form they will leave you wanting more.

The Warrior is a good all purpose machine. You wont be jumping or speed riding around on one, but they are nice, easy to ride, mellow 4 strokes. Heavy as hell though..
You can find really nice Warriors for $800-$1000.
Nowhere near as agile or reliable as the Honda 250X...

Get the 250x if you can find one!

Blasters are a great bike, nimble and have decent power, great for tearing around in woods with very tight trails. They are insanly reliable, and the mods are neverending. My buddy still has one from 1989 that the motor has never had a wrench on it, and still starts and runs flawlessly. That being said, I agree with Mosh, the 250X is a better bike overall for the price.

The Warriors up here go for $1000+ and the trx250x 's 1000+ both in semi rough shape. Blasters are $675+ in good shape, with rebuilds. To bad I like the trx body style better!

I guess you gotta work with whatca got, you can always mod the blaster out when ya want.

Does anyone know if the seating space is the same between the blaster and warrior? (Does this make sense?!)

No, a warrior is longer. A warrior rides more like a cadillac, and the blaster is like a modded honda civic. I wish I never sold my blaster, but I have one comin in a couple weeks thanks to Brapp.

Hell with the money you would pay for a used 400ex or something similar, you could get a blaster and a 250x, the best of both worlds! Maier also makes a nosepiece for the blaster that makes it look like a trx, or you could get a 2004 and up blaster nosepiece that has a built in headlight that looks pretty slick, or you can get one like Syko that resembles an lt250r, that one is my fav.

I know of a trx250x for sale locally (Toledo, Oh. area). My nephews friend has it but I'm not sure on a price. If interested PM me and I can get the scoop. I have seen it and it's in good shape, well at least when I saw it it was.

Toledo is a little too far away. I live an hour south of the bridge.
You tube is been helpful is size comparison but I've come up with nothing when searching for drags. What will a Blaster run against?

My friends son has a blaster that is jetted and piped. He and my son drag raced many times at trikefest. He was neck and neck with my son's bone stock 400ex.

blasters are awesome rides man. i love mine, probably the most reliable 2 pinger i have ever owned. takes countless beatings and comes back for more everyitme. when set up right, they are snotty as all hell! i have mine totally worked though, from motor to suspension. 240kit, carb, reeds, pipe, arms, swinger, axle, shocks, etc... i can get some decent height on it and not bottom it out, and its a blast to toss around cuz its so damn lite. heres a few comparison pics of mine next to my t3's.

Sweet Blaster. Is it about the same size as the '85 Tecate? I think I'll check with my local Yamaha dealer and see if they have a Blaster in, so I can sit on one.

Hey, did you swap the rear brakes for the disk? Could a person do the swap with Warrior or Banshee parts?

I'm pretty sure all Blasters have rear disc.

Oops! That was a stupid question, I should have googled it. Thanks for responding though. What about rear hydraulic conversions for 88-03s. What do you need? I've read that you can directly swap an 03 and on hydraulic rear setup onto the older styles.

a mint 2000 blaster can be had for around a grand if you shop around ;)

only thing they lack is reverse, but its a light quad, so its not that big a deal.

they are a lot of fun ;)

No, the only problem I have with blasters is the mechanical brakes. You can buy kits for the hydraulic swap, but will probably be cheaper just getting a take off from the new style.

I think you would be better off with a suzuki... If you think they are too fast then you probably havent actually ridden one... 250R's and Lt250's are very mellow.. they make great trail machines when near stock or mildly built... Blasters are money pits IMO.. sure they have endless upgrading potential, but unfortunately you'll constantly be wanting to spend money on it because they suck when stock... they are short and tippy.. the motors have weak low-end power.. and anyone over 5' 4" will cramped unless you wack the fenders off... its cheaper to save your money for a machine that is more capable in stock form.. after a blaster has things like a big-bore kit, carb, pipe, shocks, a-arms, tires, axle, swingarm, brakes, etc.. you'd have more money into it than buying a bigger machine

You're right I haven't been on a Suzuki 250 or Honda 250. Though I've heard they were fast. I think my 1984 200x with 10.25:1 piston runs really strong, and would be all I'd ever need. I would imagine a 250 two-stroke would run a LOT harder than the little 200x. In your opinion, is the 200x the same seating size of a Blaster? How much difference? I'll look into the machines you've mentioned because I've also heard they are bullet proof.
