View Full Version : Tecate bogging issues

I was in the process of posting for advice about running problems with the '85 Tecate that I bought Wednesday, when I had a better thought, pulled the carb, and *think* I discovered the problem(s).

This '85 is completely stock including carb, reeds, and exhaust. Air filter is new, airbox/lid is intact. It does have a RS ignition system on it, though.

It cranks easily when warm and idles as long as you want it to. The power is snappy off the bottom, lifting the front wheel without warning(as it should:cool: ) but it bogs nearly to death at more than half throttle.

I pulled the bottom plug out of the carb, and the size #280 main jet just fell out as it was loose in the plug recess, not even screwed into it's place. I'm pretty sure that it being loose in the bottom of the carb is not conducive to good power, but I'm thinking that it should be running pretty fat with that #280 anyway, since the stock main was #230. I'll pick up a few jets tomorrow and try to get it right.

Remaining question:
For some reason, this machine will actually idle real high with the choke on(lever in the down position) and the engine warm....lean out kinda high-sounding. Every 2-stroke I've had would die if you choked it when warm. Ideas?

my tri moto 125 sounded like a similar case, it would not go past 1/2 throttle without bogging, i took it apart took out the main jet ran a pin in all the holes, and i move the float around a bit to make sure it isnt stuck and it ran good after had decent power for a 1981 2 stroke never rebuilt ever

does it rev fine in neutral?

It does now, since I put the mainjet back in it's place. I'll know tomorrow if it needs a different size main, but I believe, from the sound of it free revving in neutral now(it wouldn't before), that I've cured the bogging. I have to go to the local shop tomorrow anyway, so I'm going to pick up a few sizes of main jets to dial it in, just in case.

My current state of confusion is it actually idling UP when the choke is on and the engine is warm.
