According to my Tecate manual, the stock piston has 2 rings. The top ring pin or gap is located about an inch left from the center line of the piston at the intake side. The ring below thats ring pin or gap is located about an inch right of the center line located at the center of the intake side of the piston.
Here is a scan of my manual

Hope that helps

DO NOT INSTALL A PISTON WITHOUT RING PINS!!!!! you need to get a new piston.. the kxt and kx use the same piston an all 2-strokes need to have ring pins or damage will occur

There has to be pins in the ring groove. What kind of piston? Where did you get the setup?

the kx uses different piston. and the piston has no ring pins. i just put it together with the ring gaps in the place that the kxt would go. the motor rotates good and the gaps aren't near and ports.

the rings will rotate and damage WILL occur... I have several tecate and kx topends and the pistons are the exact same. someone gave you a incorrect or altered piston... DO NOT RUN IT LIKE THAT...IT WILL FAIL... ALL 2-STROKES MUST HAVE PINNED RINGS... you have been warned and the consequences will cost $$$

Yep I concur, the rings WILL rotate, and catch a port lip, this will ruin the cyl, piston, and possibly twist your rod. Take it out before it fails.

i have a brand new tecate piston also but it's a lil different. it don't have the little pockets above the piston pin holes on the sides of the pistom like the kx piston does. also it is a lightly used piston and never failed on the guy i purchased from. he had his gear box blow up about 2 hours into runing the kx top end. so i should have no problems if i run the kxt piston? i have a new oem cast one for the same size bore.

The used one must be a wiseco? and the tecate piston an OEM? that could be the difference... someone must have removed the pins after he ran it, if not it was about to fail...
so i should have no problems if i run the kxt piston?
Not at all, and if you buy aftermarket they use the same part number.. KX250 pistons from 78-86 all interchange as well as KXT250 84-87 and early KDX250's

what are the lil pockets on the piston for?

Pockets above wrist pin holes is to make it lighter.
Did you get it off ebay? Just wondered cause I sold my 84 KX topend on there not too long ago and it went to Spanaway, WA i think.
Got any pictures?

yes it was yours, so how did it peform on the trike you had it on? and how many hours were on it? looks to be in good condition. i just pulled it apart and the ring groove pins are there. they aren't near as noticable as the ones in my new kxt piston, i feel like a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotr ailpro now. i'm an auto mechanic and kinda new too working on 2 strokes. built a few 4 stroke motors with no problems though. anyways my motor is pretty cool looking, painted it grabber green with polished flywheel cover, i also just polished my fork tube and they look sweet.

nd4speed i have a few ?'s for you. what jets did you run with this top end? i have some jets that cam out of my old built tecate motor than i will start with. also what kind of reeds were those? they are much different than the ones in my stock kxt motor. cant wait to get this setup on the trail/ sand

Listen, don't sweat it. Those piston pins did not stick out and made me look twice to see that they were there. The piston was Wiseco and the compression was very good. I probably just would have put new rings on that piston.
As for jetting I was running an old 39mm Mikuni VM round slide with a 280 or 290 main /middle clip at -10-40 degrees F at about 1500 feet above sea level. The carb was my junkiest one with a worn slide, but for some reason it worked great.
The reeds I believe were Boyesen Dual stage Power. They should still be good?
The DG pipe I had worked great and would have been a good high rev sand setup with lighter KX flywheel and ignition.
The coolant line off the head can contact the pipe so I cut another piece of radiator hose and used it as a shield between the two.
That top end was in excellent shape. Stock bore on a sleeve with a cut head and new piston. Some one spent some money on it, but everything else about that motorcycle was falling apart.
Here's where it all began for me:

Oh, and you made me realize that Trailpros are the new censorship symbols. LOL!

After looking at the picture of the KX I realized that it came with a 38 or 39mm Keihin PWK (quad vent carb) that was jetted for warmer weather. I use that on my 86 KX now. It had a 160 main / needle at 3rd clip. It was a little rich on my motor now so I put a 155 main in it. That is the carb I used to get it started.
Man I got lucky with finding two bikes with freshly sleeved and rebuilt top ends.

well i put it together with those rings. i use a tecate head that has been cut and has a polished combustion chamber. i have a mikuni carb from my 84 tecate but it looks to be bored bigger. my built tecate motor had that carb with 250 main jet and the jet need clip was at the secong groove from the bottom. i have a tecate top end that was professionally ported but needs to be plated and when that thing was together it trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotr ailpro ripped like no other, ate banshee's for breakfast. i figure going with your setuip would be much cheaper since my wife won't let me spend any money because we have a baby on the way.
.004" for every inch of bore,

I don't know if I'm going to be the only one to say it, but I know I'm the first......I actually like that motor in green. Is that the same Grabber Green I see in Auto Zone(rattle can), or some other brand?

I too think it looks surprisingly well.. Maybe I should paint the T3 motor thats going in my LT250 that color

it looks like trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro... lol jk. it is all green im workin on polishing a pump cover and water neck. and i also have an exttra clutch cover that will get polished in the near future. trying to decide what color to do the frame. i had it painted blue last spring but it didn't turn out the right color. i may go dark blue like the seat and my new renthal bars, or graphite. not sure any input would be great.

Looks real good... I'm going to powder coat my frame that same color, with a black bottom end, and polished cylinder and head.
Did that color really come from autozone? Grabber green? In a spray can? I'm going to have to get me some....

she's a screamer, clutch was slipping a bit. but it really has alot of grunt. i thought i would lose lower rpm power but it gained tons. it has a much broader power band. i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
