I got my blue 1970 trail 70 running, it's a 4 speed and hand clutch. I've had it for 13 years and never did anything with it. It had no compression so I did rings and an intake valve. Started with one kick and runs perfect. But I have problems. The clutch pulls very easily like its not doing anything and when I let go it does not return. I pulled that plate off the side and lubed everything up but that was not the problem. And also the shifter does not seem to work. It's almost like the shifter shaft is locked up. Any idea on that? I hope I don't have to pull the top end back off and split the cases.
Something else that was really weird is the cam tensioner. I have a red 1971 4 speed and it has a cam tensioner cap then under that is a tensioner bolt with a spring under it. The tensioner bolt can be locked from the outside with a bolt next to the shifter to keep the tensioner from moving. Well the blue 1970 4-speed is nothing like that at all. Its just a cap with a spring under it and no bolt to lock it. It works fine though, just really weird. Anyone ever see anything like this?
Almost all Trail 70s are 3 speed auto clutch. The 4 speed hand clutch was only an option in 2 years so they are pretty rare.
