It's going on his trail-r so I'm guessing the pipe will be the bassani and a 34mm carb?

Hard time reading the calipers.......... How many mm's? So you have a true Mugen 360? Oh boy, this is gonna be good. Just be careful removing that broken stud.... I believe those had a nicasil finish.

It's right around 83mm's, that stud is just missing I ran a tap in it today and cleaned it out some of the other threads where packed full of crud too on the intake and exhaust, the hard part is gonna be finding a stud like that one it's larger on the cylinder side. the aircooled mugen cylinders where chrome plated but I'm going with nicacil when I get it done.

We may take you up on that Ed.
It's funny how things work out. 1upfront just got another 300 kit then this cylinder comes out of nowhere. So I started looking for a head for it and now I have a lead on a 360 kit. I also found a guy with a head for it but he needs a head for a 78-79 mugen 125 and wants to use the 360 for a trade. I guess eventually things will work out. When it rains it pours.

would one of these just bolt right up to a 84 250r bottom end?

SYKO

no they require case machining and it to be done correctly.

The Hondaline 300 kit is a direct bolt on but the Mugen 360 requires machining to the cases and the crank as Syko stated.

Intake boot for the Odyssey fl 350 will be used for this one.
Polaris 400 piston will be used.
He has a cobra pipe a bassani pipe and a Mugen pipe to choose from.
I'm thinking that the 39mm pwk that is on the 300r will be used.
Those are the easy things.
Thanks to petesatc for the hard part. :beer He found a head for the cylinder. :naughty:
This thing is coming together quicker than I originally thought.shens
It wouldn't have been possible without the networking that you get from this site.:w00t:

I figured since my 300r motor has low hours on it there's no sense taking it all apart just to use the cases on the mugen motor build so I dug out a motor I bought awhile back from ebay and I'll be using it for the build, I'll be sending the cases to the machine shop this weekend for boring along with the crank to be drilled all according to the mugen instructions. Here's some pics of the motor ready to be machined.

The only problem I ever had was in the clutch, the stock setup doesn't agree with 5,000 rpm launches while riding the clutch lever LOL, but with some welding on the clutch hub to make it one piece rather than two you will eliminate the clutch chatter making for much smoother launches.
I had these two pieces welded together.

1upfront, even if I don't own a air coooled 250R, I thank you for sharing all your knowledge about these trikes. A lot of people keep their project hidden and don't want to share anything with the others. Some people here claim to modify their bike to be faster but don't want to tell us what they did. Not only you show us what you did, but you also explain it. :TrikesOwn

I think I read somewhere in one of your posts that you and your Dad work at a Honda shop. Do you use all Honda parts because you think they are the best, or because you get a discount(imagine a quetsion mark here. That key on my laptop no longer works:rolleyes: )

I buy honda parts because I have found that OEM is the best quality, me and my dad do body work at a honda car dealership but the boss owns a honda motorcycle shop next door and I get my parts there for a discount.

I noticed when my mugen head came in that the spark plug hole is straight up and down instead of angled off to the right side and thought it might be a clearance issue so today I mocked it all up in a frame with a tank so I could see if everything would clear. I also wanted to get a stock pipe in the frame to see if it was going to interfere with the head fins, I plan on having jemco make me a 83-84 250r pipe with a bigger inlet and stinger, I figure if the stocker clears everything then the Jemco should too if put together correctly. Here's some pics from the mock up, the stock pipe cleared everything and so does the plug and I was able to get a socket and ratchet on the plug too that was another thing I was worried about.

hey man the JEMCO wont clear the head I know for a fact! I had to take off part of my fins when I had the 300 on it, so I know you will have to mod the fins on yours to clear. And it was correctly mounted on all the hangers, just thought I would let you know.

03-29-2009, 10:10 AM
Thanks for the info syko. I wish I had access to a 83-84 250r jemco pipe for comparison, the mugen cylinder itself is no taller than a stock cylinder, the 300r is actually taller but the fins on the mugen head are taller than both other heads.

Hey why don't you PM bigbore and see if he has any of the those mugen bigbore pipes left? I think he's running one of those on his CR480 topend with no mods needed. That would solve you pipe problem and get you the full mugen kit!

I have one of those pipes but they are 81-82 250r pipes and just wont fit, the fat part of the pipe is in the wrong spot and interferes with the tank and head. They never had a mugen pipe for the 83-84 model so now I'm stuck with having something made lol. I don't know if I'll be beating Mark though he's still 150cc bigger, and I thought he was running alky and a dragpipe, mine will just be on gas with an inframe pipe if I can get one that will fit lol, I may look into a dragpipe:wondering

Well I've had a change in plans with the mugen motor, the 300r is staying exactly the way it is and the mugen 360 motor is going in a first gen 250r. From what I understand the 360's really shined in desert racing so I figured Id go that route with the build, I plan on running a ball saver seat in blue, works shock, +2 swinger, progressive fork springs, maybe a wide axle, vf3 reeds, billitt clutch basket, I already have a new mugen pipe for it and an air stryker 38mm, first step though is to start looking for a NICE 81- 82r preferably 82, I want to start with something in VERY GOOD condition so I won't have to spend a whole lot of time or money just fixing crap and focus on upgrades like listed above.

Really lookin nice. That thing should be pretty wild. What is the comp. likely to be, will need a strong leg I am sure. I have a old Dirt wheels mag where they compare the Mugen to the Honda 300 kit. It is kinda a direct bolt on kit Verses a more intense mod kit. in the mag they say the mugen is to powerful for regular riding and should be left only for closed course racing. Makes you want to ride it even more. lol
