As some might know, I am in the process of a top end rebuild on my 84 200es. Heres where I am at...I just put the camshaft in after torquing the cylinder head. I did a really good job of making sure the timing chain was supported. OK, I went to turn the crankshaft to algin up the "t" to set my timing, well it will not turnover with pullstarter, so I tried the electric starter, no movement there. the timing chain has no slack anymore. I can not even pull the camshaft out because now there is so little slack. I am thinking that the chain might have fell a little bit while it was resting on the camshaft?? Is there anyway or tradesecret to get some more slack or unbind the chain. I even took the tensioner out and pressed on the little stem! Please, help if possible, this is not cool!!

What might have happened is the chain fell down a bit and doubled up on the lower sproket. I would take the pull cord off and try to turn the motor backwards a bit.

I agree you may have some cam chain bunching going on.

ok guys. tookthe pull cord off and it worked
just got it running, how nice it is with no blue smoke, just changed the oil in it, had some gasket material in the screen. I know I am not suppose to do this, but I put rotella t synthetic in it, just like I put in everything else, it is ok for wet clutches!
Going to break in the rings!!!

synthetic will NOT let the rings seat properly and cause acutally ciase adverse affects such as smoothign the walls to where the rings will never seal. the breakin shoudl ALWAYS be done with conventional oil.

dump that oil out, and put back in pensoil 10w30 and let it go till you broke it in.

Yeah ditch that synthetic asap for now!! The rings may have not seated right, but they might have. How long did you ride it for? It dosent take long for the rings to seat. Also you should have used conventional, the rings and cylinder wall need to mate! And did you get the cylinder honed out before you put new rings in?

yes, I ran it with 10w40 for like 7-10 minutes (got good and hot), then drained it really well, and put in the rotella synthetic

whats the deal with the front shocks for these bikes, i have an 83 185s wont fit, and an 85 250es that wont fit, is there any tricks to get these things to work with out spending alot on OEM parts???

ok, also, it kinda has light back fires when idling down, or putting around, but if you give it a little gas it sounds smooth as can be? Is this a timing issue, valve issue, carb issue??

recheck the valve adjustment and then adjust the air/fuel mixture screw on the carb.

whats the best way to set the a/f mixture. I set the valves, what a PITA, .002 gap?? what the heck??? so hard to get feeler gauge down there

.002 sounds a little tight....try .003

the last thing you want is the valves to be hanging open do to to little clearence.

like the old saying goes.... noisy valves are happy valves

this means its better to have to much gap then not enough

did you use a new header gasket? did you take the old gasket out before using a new one?
