OK bought 84 Yamaha 225dx. it has a loud tick. I'm trying to adjust the cam shaft tensioner. i got the black plug cover off the back of the engine and the valve covers off. the book tells me that the push rod should be flush against the plug.i assume the plug is the screw right under the black plug cover but how am i supposed to see the push rod moving or flush against the plug?

i really mean newbie first atv and I'm 33 yr plus i have no mechanical knowledge

a 225 dx has an automatic am cam chain adjuster, so more than likely your valves are a little loose or the cam chain is worn. the easiest way to check the cam chain is to remove the adjuster from the jug, (two bolts) if the adjuster will fit up flush with the jug with out any tension the chain is worn out

i"ve heard that i could have gotten that tick from reving engine to high. and it caused the valve to hit the seat in the head to hard. is this true and if so will i heart ti more if i still ride

i've never heard that, yamahas are kinda famous for sucking the valve up in the head which makes the hard to start due to the valve clearence tightening up which i don't think is the case here. i would make for sure its not the cam chain loose before you ride it because if it is i could jump time and bend or break a valve causing serious engine damage. the best advice i can give you is to buy a manual,( i think someone on here sells downloadable manuals) and check the valve clearences i cannot stress enough how important a manual is it will save you alot of money and headache :welcome:
