I really want a 2nd gen Tecate. I would probably trade my 84 and 85 and parts for a good running 2nd gen.

I really wanted one too. Now that I've got one I'm not so crazy about the idea. The 84-85's will always be my #1. Simple, dependable, and FAST!

I figured I was the only one that prefered 1st gen. Tecate over the 2nd. Since 1988, I've had two '86's, one '84, and four '85's.

That's what got me. That and the fact that the 500 engine goes in those frames alot easier. Now that I own one though, I like the looks of the 85 better. It's like being with a hot chick and finding out there are some undesirable things about your dreamgirl...

Has an LA Sleeve 300 kit, ported, PWK, some unknown pipe and silencer

What year is that? 87-88 KX 500? What year swinger bolts up to it? How hard was it to get the trees and forks on the frame?

Wow!!

How do you guys like those Hi-Flite seats with the longer pad on to the tank?

In the pic it's an 88 kx250 not a kx500 but is still quite a bear to deal with when you get on the pipe. 86 kxt trees and forks bolt right on with very little modding. I used a 1st get t3 swinger and axle. had to make a custom shock mount but like BGM said sprockets and piviot bolt right on and line up.

Hi-flite seats rock btw.

So do you think the 88 500 frame would be a similar job? As far as the Hi-Flite seats I really want one in green for my 85. Green frame, white plastics, green seat. Awesome.

Oh yeah. The 88 kx250 was like the same frame and layout as the kx500 from 89-04 (not 100% about the years).

Here's my current Tecate. It looks so rough that I didn't really want to post a pic of it, but consider this a "before" pic since I've only had it since New Year's Eve. It's all original except Ricky Stator ignition, front sprocket, aftermarket air filter, and the rear tires.....even down to the piston(as story and inspection suggests).

ALL that will change this Spring.

Here's mine before this last summer's thrashing. It sports an 86 KX250 PC pipe with DG silencer turned upside down. A crappy 39mm Mikuni VM carb that I think has a float problem. A rear fender with a huge crack in it. A busted grab bar that was welded and broke again. LT250R 4/130 hubs. Cycra number plate.

I've used a Klemm Research sectional, DG, and the stock pipe on my 84. The Klemm Research was by far the best, DG was definitely better than stock. So in my opinion they are better than stock, and that was what they were made for.

Hey 2quick, well that 250r may be mine... talked to the guy for about an hour;

New engine and a spare that runs
Original Tile/Certificate of Origin
All new fenders, OEM and Maier and fiberglass rears?
Detailed and cleaned every 2 years
Setup for flat tracking and trail
About 3 boxes of parts

He wants 100.00 for it all O_O either the guy is jerking me around, or im in for a kick ass deal.

BTW Hoosier, 86 front end looks good, better if the colors matched all around =P

mjquadracer- Awesome bikes and awesome pics. Back in 1986 I drew a picture of Jimmy White on his Tecate sideways in pen on paper. My mom took me to a Mickey Thompson race at the Anaheim Stadium. They had a meet and greet on the track, where I got it autographed. It's around here somewhere, I'll have to dig it up.

Do you have an '86 frame? you should start a thread on thisI had to mount the radiators above the pipe so the tank sits higher then stock. Otherwise, the plastics fit pretty good. If i could get a custom pipe that ran lower, I could mount the rads lower and it would look a lot better, I think. But, the way it is now, it has full turning radius and everything fits.

I do have an 86 but it has a broken subframe and no engine. Unfortunately, my budget doesn't allow for me to get those things right now.

I had similar issues when my water pump seal was bad and water was contaminating my oil. The oil was thick and turning white. Kicker slipped. Same thing even with ATF on my 86 KX250. As soon as I fixed the problem the kicker issue disappeared. Also if your oil is a heavy weight and it is cold, I would think the same thing could happen.

I have one but it is stock and probably has not been used in like 7 years. I can dig it out. The shipping price to Washington won't be good if you want it fast, but I will never use it. So I will sell it cheap. I have to find it though and then I'll take pics if you are interested. You know I don't try to sell any junk.

If those are Maxxis SurTrak rear tires? If so, they are too heavy IMO (like Realator & Spider Tracs). But that is probably the least of your worries now.

Maybe I should put my motor up for grabs since that one on ebay went for like $500.

Well, here is my tecate. you migh have noticed, it needs "a little" work.

Does anyone know what's the best way to build the rear fender? I can't find one over here and noone on ebay.com wants to send to Europe.

I thought about bended stainless steel plates.
Or something like that (http://www.ersatzteile-landtechnik.de/product_info.php?info=p4848_Kotfl-gel---230-x-800-mm---Radius-480-mm.html).

The same thing with those plastic peaces that are supposed to be on the fueltank.

I know, the chain is too loose and some screws are missing (the preowner didn't really care for that).

I always though sheet metal fabbed up like they do on custom street bikes would be cool for the rad shrouds, but possibly dangerous.

Looks likes a good start to me. The motor looks clean and if it runs and rides good, well, that's what matters most.

i have started on it, i'm a bit father than that pic. needed alot of work. that shock in the pic isn't yours, yours is in alot better condition than that on. shafts pitted and hose is torn. junk basicaly!

there bear claws. heavy mo fo's. i think the sur traks are lighter. i have a set. i probaby will never use those bear claws. one has a tube and the other is flat.

the realtors work good on lt500's! in certain conditions...

Sadly, I have to agree with you on this. They definitely jack their prices up on discontinued or low availability items. Case in point: The NOS chain slider they have on ebay for $120. I have a good one on mine, but I would make one out of that white industrial plastic before I would give $120+ shipping for a factory one.

If I were a collector or a "restore" person that built machines to just look at(buying up all the rare/discontinued parts at any cost that'll never get truely USED), I might feel differently, though. I'm a "form follows function" kinda guy, so they could keep it if it were up to me.

Dear friends:I have 3 t-3 1986 model, one of them was restored to original condition in 1986 ,i have pic when i brougth but no pics now because i m waiting for complete decal set for it , the second I brougth was complete except for motor and expansion bottle, all plastics was good , i put in it a 1989 motor and 1993 pipe ,i run many times in country with it
Last week i buyed third 1986 t-3 it is in terrible state , it looks good but all plastics are fiberglass ,the chassis has bad welded for broken hit and many others things,I buyed for to put this motor in the other and made a jimmy white replica, the rest parts i want to put in my 1989 kx chassis and made that can to be a 1989 t-3 this things are very dificult to me ,because if you is dificult to get parts for your t-3 in USA, you think what will be for me in Spain where nobody knows threewheelers except people that buyed it in 1989 when the threewheelers was forbidden in USA,I know all of history that as they arrived to Europe they was 1986-87 T-3 ,1986-87 klt 185,1986 TRI_Z and 1986 Triz convert to quad but this other history.
Your hepl is welcome for my projects
