I need to time my 81 250r. Ive tried timing it by the index marks behind the flywheel rotor but no luck. Is there a way to hook up a timing light to it? If so is there a special kind i need to buy or just a normal timing light. Also where do i hook it up at?

Yeah just use a normal timing light. I hook mine up to a car battery, the other wire goes to the spark plug wire (either clips over the outside of the wire or comes with a jumper to put between the plug and the cap).

thanks for the anwsers. Im deciding between bringing it down to the honda shop for them to time it or just buying a timing light and doing it myself. The shop said they would do it for 45. So im going to check and see how much timing lights are.

Most likely going to be cheaper to have them time it if this is a one time deal. Or ask around at work i'm sure someone has a light laying around...

okay one more question. Ive never used a timing light. Do i have to turn it over fast or how do i crank it to see if the timing is right?

you can "rent" the light for a coupel of bucks from a lot of the local auto stores.

You use it when the engine is running and at idle.

Nope. Not with the light anyway. It functions off the pulse of the spark while the machines running. And the fly wheel has to be spinning to check it.
