how to remove 185/200s rear brake drum

Can anyone in here giv me some tips on how to remove the rear brake drum? The drum is on my 83 honda 185s. I took the cover off, and there are holes facing the tire on the right side. Is there supposed to be a special puller that I need to take it off that fits these cut outs? I thought it might be threaded on at first, but the pipe wrench wont turn it, so I dont think it is. I also heated it up pretty good, and still no luck with the pipe wrench. Any input is appreciated. Thanks again, Jon.

If it ain't been off in a long while the shoes tend to have worn and left a slight belcast in the housing making it hard to get the housing off....make sure you have the brakes FULLY released and it should pull off without too much hassle...

When I changed the drum on my 83 185s it came right off. Can you attach a photo of the drum and axle for us?

did you remvoe the brake cables from the rear brake lever? those have to be removed before it will release pressure to let the drum come off.

Yes, loosen the brake adjuster all the way then tap on the drum with a mallet and with any luck it will come off. I have had to make a puller before using an old hub and 3 long studs.

I have the adjusters all the way off. I cant get any pics of it at this moment, sorry. I cant seem to get the cam to move, maybe it is siezed? This is maybe why I cant get it off. I have another one on a different honda 200, and that one moves freely, even by hand, so I know thats not normal to be stuck that hard. When I removed the cover it was filled with dust, and didnt look like it was taken off since new. i even tap it with a hammer on the lever where the adjusters go, and it dosnt budge.

I bought this 185 just a couple weeks ago. It didnt have any spark, and the wires were mangled, so I replaced that, and got it to spark. Then it wasnt getting gas so I cleaned the carb. It didnt run good at all so I removed the muffler and now it runs awsome. The muffler must have been sitting on the ground, and a mouse must have went in the hole where the headpipe connects. I couldnt blow it out with compressed air, or get it to come out with flame heat, so I filled it with hot water, and nothing came out at all!!! Anyways, I had to cut it with a hack saw, and knocked it out with a hammer. It was plugged solid. now I am having a close friend weld it back together, and hopefully it works. I just need to get the brakes working, ard figure out how I am going to mount the rear seat and fenders form a 1982 honda atc 185 (totally different) The machine has forks from an earlier 185, and not the suspended ones like it should. Thank you guys for the advice, and keep it coming if you have any ideas.

82 were solid forks. 83 is the first yr the 185 had them, and "only" the 185s had them not the 185 itself. so your forks are probebly correct. (well at least to my knownedge so far) you coudl tape some pb blaster and soak the adjuster in it, and then let it sit for 5 hours, come back and do it again. do this for a day or so and then take a very large set of channel locks or pipe-wrench and try to twist that adjsuter lever a little but. (take the actual cable connection lever itself off before ytou try this). if no budge, then spray some more and let sit som emore. after a coupel of days os soaking it still don;t move, then see if you can take the adjuster peice with the hammer and it move in (use the wood as a bugger unless you don't care and are willing to replace it then it's bang on it directly)

if it don't move by then it's rusted solid and will not come out. then it's time to go to ebay and find a repalcement in good shape or get one from here. the 185/200 rear brake hub assembly shoudl be the same for all those bikes all years and models (excluding the 200es and x models)

After you have the 2 axle nuts off, take the outer chain cover and chain off. Then pound on the right end of the axle, so it comes out the left side of the trike. If you do it this way, It won't matter if the brake is hanging up or not.

DO NOT mushroom out the threads on the righthand end of the axle. One way is to stick a wheel hub back on the right end of the axle using the washer and nut, and go ahead and tighten it lightly. Then put your deep socket on the center nut and then pound like hell on the socket with your sledge hammer until the axle comes out the left side of the trike.

Use plenty of pb blaster or something like others have said too. These can be stuck bad sometimes.

I have put PB blaster on it, and nothing yet. I might just have to try to pound it out. The 185 is a 1983 model (S), but someone put on forks from an earlier model. i guess I didnt specify the year above. thanks for the input.
