"buy allrights it should not have run" Swigin
Thats the feeling for the day when at the local motocycle swap meet today Bandito90 bought this 73?RD60 for 125.00. We brought home in the back of my suburban. It look rough, REAL ROUGH. But we diconnected the key switch, straped on the dummy tank , and with the use of the "magic file" to the points it started in three kicks.. Next was the ride through the yard, needs a carb clean but it did move under its own power, lol

that cool that it ran. i'll have to get that 185s i picked up running it'll feel at home with his motorcycle. They are both in the REAL rough catagory:lol: and were cheap.

If I wouldn't have been there, I wouldn't have believed it. A little premix and hooked up a couple disconnedted wires and a few swipes with "the magic file" and it ran. I think the premix was a little bit much, but it was so quiet if it wasn't for the smoke and the single dash light, you wouldn't realize that it was running. I think the high speed jet was a little fouled and maybe raise the needle clip a notch, but it ran and moved. And it looked like it ran into the back of a truck or something! It made my day. It was even more amazing than my Tiger running. It seriously needs some cosmetic work though. LOL

vealmonkey--- i picked up a 82 185s at the same swap meet for $95. the guy said it runs perfect no smoke. he stole the pull rope assembly and all the rear brake stuff for a nice 200s he had.
it cosmetical looks like his little motorcycle or probably worse:lol:

Jason trust me when I say when everyone wasn't talking about bandito90s' rd, they were talking about the 185. I'm glad I didn't go to the swapmeet, I heard there were alot of goodies there. I need to get what I have going and thin down the fleet quite a bit. I guess the next time I go up to Bruces, I will have to bring the gt80 and the bw200. The gt80 started out looking a whole lot like bandito90s rd. I pick up a part here and there and it is looking way better. I just need to get some spark in it now, maybe a new piston or rings. It needs a session with the magic file. Now the bw200, I'm not sure what that needs, except for some Bruce TLC as I've lost the spark in that too, but it's an electronic ignition.
Jason, did you pick up that suspension frame yet?

Damn, I wish I would have been there to see fourth gear. Did you pick up any bits for it off of ebay yet? Have you started spraying black primer yet?
And the GT80 does have points, it's the bw200 that doesn't have points
I wonder if Jason got the 185 running yet?
Maybe you should retitle this thread the "Ultimate RD POS 60" thread in honor of the edog paint job it will soon be getting. I hate to admit it, but I was looking on ebay for RD60 parts last night at work!

I have changed my evil bike burning ways. I saw a headlight bucket, triple trees and headlight fork ears on ebay. I saw alot of headlight rims, but I hadn't checked the parts number for the 60 yet. And whatever that extra gauge was, it isn't supposed to be there. I have seen a nice little cafe fairing though. And someone just listed a nice rd starting at $200 with some nice extra parts. I want to see you get it going but I hate to see the 90 be neglected. Did you get the 60 to your house yet? I know you're on a deadline. LOL
bandito90
01-27-2009, 05:10 AM
Pat the bike is at my house. The headlight I believe will interchange with rd200.The bucket on ebay seems to have rusted through,But the other parts look good.Oh,and i 'm not neglecting the 90.I have two carbs coming in the mail.

i got the 82 185s running. the guy stole the header pipe for his nice 200s so i just stuck a 200x header on it. switched the gas tank to another one since the one on it looks like it was sitting with salt water in it and is reaaly apoxed up on the bottom. it fired rite up on the 3rd pull and does not smoke and idles:Bounce
the trike looks like it rolled down the side of a mountian. the forks are really bent and it has a 110 front wheel hub no brakes witha suzuki lt125 rim. it has a 200s fender cut and rigged to the rigid forks. it has klt200 4 lug rims on the back drilled to 4x130 and they are really rusty. the grab bar and mufler are welded on permanent. front seat bracket is cut off due to the unknown dirt bike seat that was rigged to the 185s fenders that are really busted up. the only good chassis parts are the axle related stuff.
just describing the condititon for the people that did not witness its beauty.:D i got some funny looks rolling it out.
thats cool tim that the rd60 runs so good are you going to restore it or just make it a decent one to ride.

so good running trike for around $200.
Vealmonkey
01-29-2009, 11:36 PM
So you don't mean graft as in cut and weld 2 frames together, just combine the best of both trikes parts into one. I see now. You had me worried there. But I did here you would work pretty hard to combine the best of several pieces to make one good assembly. Sometimes I wish I had that kind of reserve of junkers to draw from, but I just don't have the room or the resources. I'm looking forward to coming up and riding your track in the spring though. Let's see some pictures of these trikes you are combining. Bandito90 was brave enought to post his.

Timmy, What's the good word? I'm out of the loop down here in Balto-less! Have you gotten any parts in? I have been looking but haven't seen much. There is an indoor motorcycle junkyard down here in Baltimore city near the Ravens stadium. I'll dig up the phone number for you so you can call them and see if they have anything. Has Alysa found any parts for you yet? I wan't to see you get that thing looking halfway decent and rolling again. I'm going to have to bring up the old gt80 next time I come up and see if we can get a spark in it. I've been having a heck of a time. It's needs a session with the magic file! LOL And a decent handlebar kill switch too.

Hey Timmy, it looks like alot of internal engine parts fit both the rd60 and the and my gtmx,gt80, mx80 dirtbike. If I can get this engine running, you need a bigger engine? LOL I still have the bigger reed valve kit that adds the larger carb too and the aftermarket expansion chamber that is nos. I bet that rd would scream. Then you would have an rd80! And I know there were aftermarket heads for the gt80 series of bikes too. The early yamaha 80cc bikes were disignated gt1 and all the parts switch over with the gtmx 80 models except the yz engines.
bandito90
02-05-2009, 03:39 PM
I believe some of the very early yz 80 engines shared some of the parts as the gt/mx engine. The reed valve would probably really wake the bike up.Do you know how similar the head or the engine is to the ysr50?Also is the expansion chamber a down pipe or up pipe?I did get the head light today and it's complete and in decent shape. It came from a rd125.
Vealmonkey
02-05-2009, 11:47 PM
The pipe for the 80 is an up pipe which would be pretty cool on the 60. No idea on wether the head is similar to the ysr50, but the exhaust screws on just like your which is the way the early gt60 and gt80s were. The reed valve set up lets you bolt on a 20mm carb, but you could probably find one just a hair bit bigger. I think the reeds themselves are Plastic. The kit comes with a reed spacer and a new reed body which is way bigger than the gt80 and it has an out part which is what the carb would bolt onto. It comes with all necessary gaskets and bolts. It's a rare period piece. Also the real expansion chamber comes in its' original box and has the makers name on it. If you could find an old webco or DG head, you would have quite the giant killer. You could probably shave the stock head and bump up your compression, but you might want to change the dome shape some. Also a little porting and little bike with drum brakes would be scary. There were several other makers of after market heads for the gt1-gt80 series of bikes and you might get lucky and find one of those. You would have to find one of the old mini cycle magazines that was out back there in the day and there were 2 or 3.
bandito90
02-06-2009, 02:36 AM
I'm going to get it going better first before I tear into the engine.I never knew they made so much for the gt's I did like to ride the mx100 and dt175 bikes back in the day.
Vealmonkey
02-06-2009, 03:02 AM
I have a real nice mx175 roller for you if you want it. Also the name of the cycle junkyard in Balto-less is Baltimore Cycle Salvage. I haven't been by there in a year or so. You might want to give them a call too. If they have anything you want and you pay for it, I can pick it up for you. But don't have me bringing up junkers every weekend! LOL Don't forget to check ebay for the rd60 tach and speedo. Also I will get you pics of the pipe and reed kit and post them here. I just took some pics of my remaining turbo wheels and I'm going to post them in their own thread here shortly. People all of a sudden have been bugging the tar out of me for turbo wheels since that pair popped up on ebay and I answered a couple questions on them. I gave Eric that bought the suspension 185s a decent set that needed a little elbow grease to be nice so he could put them either on that suspension 185s he got from me or that other joker/bandito frame he got from me with the rut ryder front end.
Vealmonkey
02-06-2009, 03:27 AM
Timmy, here are pics of the pipe and the reed kit for the bigger carb. How cool are these? I know they would help to make your bike fly and be the only one like it around. Now I'm not 100% sure if the reed kit is put together exactly the way it should be. Even though it is crazy looking on the outside, the inside is nice and smooth and it looks like you could even open it up a bit more! I guarantee there wouldn't be another one around like it and I'm sure it would be the talk of any 2 stroke forum.
bandito90
02-06-2009, 11:18 AM
Those are some nice and rare parts.I wonder if the pipe would make a nice down pipe upside down.
Vealmonkey
02-06-2009, 11:54 AM
If you turned it upside down it would probably stick out at the wrong angle and at best it would exit on the left side of the bike.

02-06-2009, 03:39 PM
Some of my sources are well guarded secrets. Do policemen give up their informants? Let's just say I have access to some really cool stuff on the westcoast, but it is for the more obscure early dirtbikes and such which I'm not really into. I just happened to fix up this gt80 for my buddys kids and 6 months later they tried to mate the yamaha and a honda front end and had the poor bike all hose up. I've just been getting bits and pieces here and there from the dealership and ebay to put the correct front end on it and alot of new parts as I can find deals. I had this thing running for the kids years ago until they hosed it up and I have been having fits trying to get a spark back in it ever since. I've had spark once or twice for a short amount of time but it never stayed. I can't quite figure it out. I probably need a new handlebar switch, but everyone I've bid on I've been blown out of the water and it hasn't been that big of a deal to try and get a new one from the dealer. I would like to find a nice little kill switch but I'm just not sure what switch would work. I have the run switch bypass but I'm having fits trying to set the points. So it's just been sitting in the basement. Anyway remembering a parts contact on the westcoast, I sent him an email and low and behold I got this pipe and reed box kit. I had the choice of about 12 different exhaust actually, but I really like this one. Heck, I could have even bough a low pipe and some flattracker parts as at one time these bikes had quite the aftermarket support. I'm sure those flattracker parts are long gone now though. So here it sits. But I know now that Bruce has the magic file!!!
bandito90
02-06-2009, 04:38 PM
I know you have some pretty hefty sources for old parts.A down pipe would be pretty cool on the rd.I bet I can get a ysr pipe to work easily.Does your source have any like pk,or fmf frames and parts for XR75's?

bandito90
02-06-2009, 05:02 PM

Update,I just cleaned the bike a bit today.Took off the broken tach and cable till I can find a replacement.Put the new headlight brackets on and the light from a rd 125.I could not measure the old smashed light too good.It appears to be about six inches.I thought the 125 had the same light but was wrong. It's a little over six inches.I don't think it looks too bad though.

Timmy a big improvement, but it looks naked without alot of stuff all busted up and flopping around on it. You need a couple cans of grey primer, seriously. You are keeping an eye on that speedo and tach right? There were a couple other bits and pieces I saw on there. Also, from what I can find, there doesn't seem to be much from a 125 and a 60 that is switchable.

Well if you want to call that rusty piece of sheet metal with that mystery pad a "seat assembly"! Lack of paint and primer and the mystery pad all help to save necessary weight which is a big concern when you can only use one or 2 gears. That headlight on there now is much less aerodynamic than the previous unit was. The unbroke broken glass lens like that provides too much winde resistance in second gear. Maybe you should think of "drilling" the headlight to lessen the wind resistance. LOL I just couldn't help it. I really wished you got those gauges Timmy.

Nice. Where's the Tach? Now you need some turnsignals and a decent rear taillight with the tag assembly. GT80 clyinder, piston and head. They are pretty cheap used and some gaskets. We might have you doing 55 yet! LOL Once you get that bigger carb and reeds, we might have to fix you up with that reed kit and see if the pipe fits. Wouldn't that be trick? And we have to get you a decent shifter pedal for that 90 also. I like to see your projects moving forward. Get yours running and I might have to drop off one of the stroker kits and let you have at it! Or maybe just get the gt80 going and the frame switched out and stuff. How's all that title stuff coming along? Great job by the way. I was stoked Sunday to see that baby come rolling down the road too. Now at least you can start to make it respectable looking. Maybe get the guys at the shop to paint it for you.

What's the latest? Have you mounted the Tach and got yourself some new lightbulbs yet? I'm getting fired up about the POS60! Gt80 topend! Let's get this project moving. Let's get out the steelwool and chrome polish. How about some paint?

wow, night and day difference....but i kinda liked the look of the old seat.
maybe you could cut that foam or start from scratch and give it that hollow look it had.

It does'nt look that bad.I too liked the cut away look,But I also like the comfy seat.I still have the old one to work with.I bought the whole unit for like 10.00.I put the tach on and plan to cut the bars down like two inces on each side and add grips. The bike needs a tune up.Still need a wiring diagram to tie up the loose ends in the wiring department. Also the 80cc topend is lookink pretty tempting.

80cc's, yeah baby! I have the accessories! We won't be sure how the pipe fits until you at least get a cylinder. It shouldn't be to hard to dry fit an 80cc cylinder and check fitment.

Having nothing to do today.I decided to tinker a bit with the RD.Being that I can't get the YSR50 parts I was going to put on it.for more power. The thought of a massive four stroke came to mind.If the engine cradle was a tad bit lower the XR200 might have fit. That and the way the tank hangs lower would also be a problem.

Now that you have the 60 engine out is the time you need to test fit the gt80 cylinder! That ought to perk this puppy up seome. Or maybe if you went 2 stroke power you may have some more room in that frame. I have an old 250 yammie 2 stroke at the house you can have if you want, complete with aftermarket head and I have a nice old school compression release also.

Yeah,I was just toying with different ideas today. The best bet would be the 80 top end.Easy performance increase.Do you happen to have one?

I have the whole gt80 plus the pipe and the intake.

Pushed the RD over to Blue27 motor sports and finalised the mounting of the new pipe. It's a Team calamari built for a YSR50.It should work out as both bikes have similar engines.I had make the rear mount. And Blue27 welded the bung to the frame. Also I cut the area off where the center stand used to be.It allows the pipe to not hit the frame and help with the bigger issue of the pipe sealing at the head.as the inch or so made it so the flange at the head would sit flat.Still have to work out the whole foot peg brake pedal and kick starter.I have a set of YSR rear sets coming and would like to find a YSR kicker when I can find one.

I think I still have a set of Sl70 rear shocks somewhere in my garage. They were in pretty good shape. Not sure if they are the same size or not but I can try and find them to measure for you if you want.

I'm not sure what shocks I'm going to use.But maybe the sl ones are the same length.I might lean toward a set of high performance ones for a z50 or ct70 depending on the length. The suspension on the thing is pretty bad.And I'm not sure why the two silencer?Maybe noise or looks?

I will measure the shocks for you just in case. They actually were ok when I had them on the sl70.. and I did weigh 200 lbs. I'll get all the dimensions by the next weekend for you. If you want to try them out I am sure I can get Vealmonkey to bring them up with him next time .

I have to get the dimensions off the ones that are on it.But if you can let Vealmonkey run them up here. That would be cool.
