Can the shaft be removed without damaging the lower triple clamp on an 85 250R or 350X? It looks like it can be pressed out and I have read a post that inferred that it could be removed. I just wanted a little input before I put the hydraulic press to it.

Yes It can be pressed out. Be sure to leave a little extra room around the stem, because It has a round clip on It like the clip that holds the lock nut on a Honda rear axle. I used a socket on one that I pressed out and the clip got trashed.

Thanks so much Jason. I think that the easiest way to swap the X front clip onto my R will be to transfer the shaft from the R lower triple to the X lower triple. I am under the impression from what I've read that the shaft hole in the X lower triple is bigger than the one in the R lower triple so I'll have to work around that.

You can most likely either drill it or have a local machine shop bore it out (they could leave a ridge in the bottom for it to seat) .02 or .03 smaller than the shaft so it presses in snuggly and you should be good to go...

Yes, you will need to make a bushing.

I've done It a couple different times, on my cr500 the stem sizes were real close, so I bored the 350x hole a bit bigger, then made a bushing that had some thickness to It so I didn't just smear a thin bushing.

Cool, thanks. Fortunately I have extras of this stuff so I don't have to take my ice trike apart while I try to figure this out. I might be better off having a few thousands shaved off of the entire 350X shaft so that I can put the 250R lower bearing on it. I'm also thinking about going to an auto parts store and seeing if they have anything that fits nicely on the lower portion of the 350X shaft but has the same outside diameter as the 250R bearing. I also tossed around the idea of grabbing a 350X tapered head set conversion kit and using the lower bearing out of that.
