A few pics of some fairly rare Tecate swingarms. But included are sweet old exhausts, hubs, axles and airboxes. These particular components really turn up the drool factor. But really, even something as small as a sweet old sticker gits it done too.......:naughty: Lets see the parts for "Team Green"

Supposedly, the ignitions fit 84 - 87 as far as I've been told. Mine does say PVL on it in several different places. Every plastic piece has PVL on it and the flywheel/magneto has it stamped on. The other metal pieces, i would have to check.

Here's a few pics of some of my NOS oem Tecate stuff. Kick gear set. And must be replaced as such. Discontinued and are the reason for all those busted up shins and toes. The tips round off and don't "hold". Chain guide and sprocket cover in package, obviously discontinued. New Tecate head, 84 kx cylinder and oem head gasket. This is all still stored in original packaging, but i will not hesitate to use any of it when necessary. I have bought lots of oem stuff for all of my bikes over the years, lots of which has been discontinued. Have to keep the rags tight.... and running strong into the future.:naughty:

newest addition to my collection of parts, some 86 t3 maier low profile rear fenders. they were pretty cracked when i got them, but i did some plastic welding on them, and now i am going to be dropping them off to my uncles shop for some professional finishing and painting!!!! i havent seen to many, if any now that i think of it, of these showing up. i think these qualify for the "rare" title. might use them on my flat tracker project, might just hang them on the wall with some of my other discontinued peices. hmmmmmmm......

scooterroo
02-22-2009, 07:57 PM
well you know how they looked. i took them, leaving the zip ties in place, and made sure both sides of the crack were nice and tight and lined up correctly. started at the lowest part on the inside of the kicker tunnel, worked my way up to the back side of the fender. cutting the zip ties as i went, and filling the holes. then when i got the crack all sealed and nice and solid, i took some extra polypropylene plastics and filled that one hole in the corner by the back left side corner of the seat. sanded it all down after to smooth it out some to where its good enough my uncle will be able to clean them up even better, and his paint jobs are quality work, dont have to worry about the paint cracking and flaking off, he knows what he is doing. these are gonna look sweet when the bike is done. i plan on running a new set of either american racers or hoosier tri tracs.

Here are a few pics of a gently used first gen full Klemm Research exhaust. And a pic of a old power Pros silencer. It was mentioned not long ago that power pros may have made Klemms stuff? Silencers do share many similarities, so there may be some truth to this. But....... the pipe, one of a kind Klemm stuff. No other silencer would work on Klemm stuff without heavy mods. This insured a matched system without people getting cheap and buying a different brand X type.

dcreel
02-24-2009, 05:27 PM
That is definitely a Klemm research pipe and silencer. Mine was the natural coloring with the welds and all standing out. They are definitely a piece of art. As I said before the whole pipe from head pipe to stinger is cone welded. No stamped pieces. Amazing work. Wanna sell it? :-)

Yes, I have talked to Harry Klemm via e-mail. Here is his response to the Tecate exhaust.
"Doug,
Thank you for the email, and many kind words. I've heard through the grapevine that the older hand-build cone style KR pipes are getting big money nowadays .... very nice.... but ironic :-) To say the least, I don't have any, nor have the means to make any (sadly).

Back in the day, the pipes were actually made by a shop called Power Pros (Dan & Tom Kistler) in Placentia California. They are still in biz today, and still building exhausts (although I think mostly 4stroke stuff). I don't have a phone for them, but I suspect a quick google search could turn them up. Who knows, they may still have the tooling to make them.

Good luck on your project. Respectfully, Harry Klemm Group K"

Here is his e-mail at Group K. They do mainly watercraft stuff now.
Groupklemm@aol.com

I have also talked to Power Pros about the Tecate exhaust. Their response was almost hateful. They do not and will not build any Tecate pipes.

tecat-z
02-25-2009, 08:49 PM
Hmmmm, interesting stuff dcreel. Thanks for the info... Seems that Power Pros was a major player back in the day for high quality custom exhaust fabrication. But very little of their own stuff is out there. Could it be even more more obscure than Klemm?

I can tell you the difference between the Klemm research pipe I had and the DG pipe is huge. The size of the headpipe was massive and hung pretty low. I was jumping out at Devore, CA and the headpipe landed on a rock off a jump. It completely contorted and flattened the pipe. I kept it for a long time, until my parents threw it away.

I may have to get a Jemco.. I love the cone welded pipes. They just look like art to me.

Na Justin, it's going on a really special bike i plan on finishing next winter. But.... Here's a few pics of a very rare Klemm Research big bore cylinder kit. As delivered this top end was referred to as a '327' cylinder kit. Standard bore was 80mm. It is currently .020 over. It uses a stock throw crank. However it uses a 2mm spacer plate to accomplish a few things. Raise port height, and allow for more crankcase volume. The head has been lowered to compensate for the added height of cylinder. I've spoke to Harry and his brother a few times, as well as the owner of Klemm Cycle supply. But the piston that was used was to the best of their knowledge a custom made piece. He said the kit was a fairly rare one even at the time, and was designed with a big wide spread of midrange torque to allow easy cruising of the big dunes out west. It was not a high speed screamer like a kx equipped Tecate. Rather point, shoot, and enjoy massive amounts of smooth power. So i've been researching piston options and have come to 2 different conclusions. A big bore atc/trx 370 piston is availiable up to 80.50, which has a 18mm pin and a very close pin to crown height. Or step up to a 20mm pin and use a early model JS750 small pin piston. Which requires a rod with the same center to center. Either way both pistons will require extensive work, but this is the only one of these i've ever seen! I plan on sending it to U.S. chrome and having the cylinder plated at it's current 80.50mm bore. :beer

tecat-z.. Where are you guys finding this rare stuff? Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. That is awesome stuff right there. I'd put klemm Research stuff at the top of the must have ladder. I actually met Harry Klemm when I was a teen. He actually showed me how to repack my Klemm silencer. Awesome stuff man..

He had a monthly section of 3wheeling magazine where he talked about al;l kinds of technical stuff. I still have quite a few of his articles from then.

Where did you guys have your tecate banner made? The one you guys were flying at the Midwest rampage? I need something like it to use as a template for a mural I want to put on my garage wall. To cover up a couple of harley murals from the previous owners.

Tecat-Z Is that Adjustable link for an 84-85 Tecate? And are they still around to buy? If not, any chance of that part being built by someone here on the site. Thats exactly what Ive been looking for for years. Nice stuff by the way.

Cobra is still around. I would put there pipes way below DG's stuff. That is an awesome find for sure. I'm really curious about the hubs. What is the pattern for the hubs with the 8" wheels? The stock 4/156 is too large for 8" wheels.

Any one know if the steering stabilizer is worth while to put on? I remember them but have posted for info in the past and never get any help. I would be curious on how it mounts.

The one on my 84-85 Tecate works great. But I don't know how beneficial it would be without the fat tire in front. Mine has a mount that replaces the head stay. The other mount uses 2 of the front fender mount holes on the left side. Definitely helps keep the front end straight in the whoopdedoos..

Wouldn't the stabilizer make it harder to move the whole assembly around though?? :wondering

Also, I know they've been posted before, but I have 2 aftermarket headlight guards in nearly perfect condition:

Yes, it is harder to move from lock to lock, but the difference is small.. compared to the extra stability it gives you in the rough stuff. In the rough stuff it also takes less strength to keep it straight.

Here is a rare headlight guard for you..

I recently purchased a bike that had several old school parts. It looks to have possibly been a racer at one point with a kx250 ignition and 38mm carb among the other parts. The only thing it was really missing was a pipe, as it had an OEM pipe with an Answer silencer. Here are some pics of the parts as they came off of the bike: +6 Laegers, +4 Axle (not sure what kind, locknut is RAD as is bearing carrier), 3 piece RAD bearing carrier with tapered roller bearings, number plate, JP Racing airbox cover. I threw in a pic of some Maier fenders, they don't look like the "86" Low Profiles earlier in the thread, that look like 85's. These are a couple inches shorter than the stock fenders, but may not be LP's The seat is original and unmolested too.

That numberplate is awesome.. It's nice to see new variations popping up still. The one you have flairs out covering each of the fork pinch bolts.. Are those fenders you have fiberglass?

I figured I would post this here as well as in the T3 group. The JP airbox lid is for sale (make offer). I had to pay a little more than I wanted for the stuff but I think I will come out allright on it. There were two cylinders in great shape with stock plating and a brand new Wiseco so I can build a stock motor for a change in pace! The plus six axle is in great shape and I might sell it for the right price lol.

All the ones I found arent actual T3 kickers and would have to cut the fender. Bout to say hell with it, Blue wale just sent me a pic of one that may work but will look kinda wierd. I need to ride. Not sure if there is another kicker that is compatable but tryed a blaster one yesterday just for the hell of it and not even close

Recently got a few of my other Tecate swingarm restorations complete. Included is a pair of Westcoast 1st gen examples that feature a +2 & +4. The +4 is extremely rare, as i have only ever seen this and one other. I also have a pair of the +2 Franks Racing 1st and 2nd design swingarms for the 84-85 Tecate. The oval example is also extremely rare as compaired to the later box style. Neither of the Franks built arms were what i consider to be a mainstream item, but the quality is absolutely unsurpassed compaired to ANY arm i have ever seen. The oval arm is considerably smaller in terms of material used, but looks meatier from the side due to the taller, yet narrow material. I have been fortunate to have been able to acquire such nice pieces to work with over the years. To me, there are few things that compare to the coolness of a true original oldschool swingarm, to use as the centerpiece of any serious restoration project.
