Trick to getting the rubber taillight mount in??

Ok... I bought a tail light for m 250r but I can't get the damn rubber mounts into the 'C' looking things on the frame!!

I've removed the center plastic plug on the rubber but it just won't get in there. I don't want to tear them or bend the metal.

Is there an easy trick I'm missing?

put a little WD 40 on the rubber mount or dip in boiling water to soften the rubber then try pressing it home. They can be hard to press in but it will go.
