Thats the whole problem.....
I always advised people to PC or have an Auto paint applied but it's 200$ and upwards no matter how you slice it.
Some guys like PJ1 and claim it to stand up better. Expensive, but 30$ is better than hundreds. Just be sure to prep it super good and wipe it down with lacquer thinner before painting it.
EDOG is our resident spray bomb master, maybe he'll chime in......

If I may chime in here. I use high quality ($5 - $7 per can) spray paint. I normally strip the frame down - getting all rust off - or scuff the paint really good. then I prime it - and rough the primer up with a green scotch bright pad. I then apply 3 - 4 coats of spray paint - each coat very lightly (lots of thin coats is better than a few heavy coats). And then finish it off with clear coat spray paint. I feel for the money - it holds up great. The whole problem I have with PC is if you want to change it up down the road - it can be a bear to remove. for any OEM restore - it is the way to go - but ion a budget - get some good spray paint and you are all set.
On other parts - if you have access to a sand blaster - use it to remove all rust spots - and you can even take parts down to the bare metal - then prep - prime and paint.
I am a por15 fan. The stuff holds up better than paint, but of course not as much as powder coat. The stuff is very, very hard and will not scratch. I use the por15 black rust preventer stuff. You are not supose to spray it but i do. I were as SCBA when i do it. This stuff is very bad. Then i use por15 top coat with any color i want. If they dont have a color, just send them a sample and they will match it. I even use por15 high temp on the exhaust. On the 70, i am building i went ahead and used the same paint on the exhaust as the frame. Just to see if it will hold up. I ran it for 20 minutes and there was no melting, smoking. So i will have to see.

I dont know about you, but I got absolutely sick of painting my frame with spray paint. So I bought a can of undercoating and blasted the frame and swingarm. Hasnt worn or chipped yet. Its just a flat textured black. Looks pretty nice.
