if you have a first gen r you'd have to crazier than I to get much more air than that

all depends on that particular first gen and how it's setup. You don't think the boys back in 81 and 82 weren't 'airing' em out BIG time? Of course they did.
And before everyone starts jumping in with a whine and cheese dinner - yes - the suspension on later R's are worlds better. Everyone and their sister has that figured out.
But a properly set up First-Gen can handle jumps and bumps just fine. Throw a good aftermarket (works for example) rear shock on one and your really only limited by the front forks. (which, if you don't mind doing it - can easily be fixed with a 200x swap)

Is this where putting th 84 R guys in a 350X fork comes in? They are longer right, for more travel?

I think so - it's only been very recently I've been researching the second Gen R and options to upgrade it (for information for airfoolers.com readers)
Right now I'm pretty much more knowledgeable on the First Gen R and upgrades for it. (that said, I still haven't found the 'perfect' rear shock upgrade yet)
But again, if you don't mind deviating from a 'stock' setup you can make the first gen handle WORLDS better then how it came stock. Same with the second gen really - but the second Gen has a nice start anyways with the longer swingarm with linkage plus more travel up front and the narrow front tire!

I really don't have anything 'good' on hand. Sorry.

Or just a lot of finesse and proper timing. Watch the BMX riders at your local track, bigger air and 0" suspension travel. Of course a bicycle is lighter and easier to manuever but alot is proper ramps, finesse and timing.

true.. i used to race bmx and i'm still pretty good jumping my bmx bikes. but an old atc has alot more weight hitting the ground/landing. it is about timing throttle control and landing the down side of the ramp/jump...
