I just got a '85 Big Red. The problem is a gear crunching sound coming from the starter gears. The guy I bought it from had the gear taken out of the small casing by the starter so nothing would get broken. I put the gear back in so I could maybe see what the problem is. When I kick the bike over it starts fine but you hear a small noise down at the starter. Also when you shut the bike down gear crunching sounds come from down there. Sometimes pretty loud. Its like the starter is not disengaged or something. I'm not very familiar with bikes with electric start, but if it has it, I want to be able to use it! It looks like the same set up that is on my '87 foreman. One thought that I had is that maybe its not the right/original starter, but I don't know. Anyone have any ideas?

Can you give me a little more information? I'll see what I can do with what you told me, but I don't really know what you are talking about off hand.
