View Full Version : 200s Timing Chain Question

Hello, I am working on a 84 200s and just did a top end rebuild and am putting it back together currently. My question is there a way I can get the timing chain tight without it running? Just would like to see if it is wore out before I put it all back together.
Have it on right now and it is really loose and would love to see if it is even going to take up all the slack or not is all.

It has and auto adjuster which will take up the slack without the motor running. Loosen the 14mm adjuster bolt, then tighten it back up. You should still adjust the chain again when it is running but this will be a good start.

I did that and it is not as tight as I care for at this point. Have had bad experiances with the timing chain slipping and don't want to go there again. Don't see anything in the manual on replacing the timing chain either. Is it accessible by pulling the left crankcase cover or will the case need to be split for this one?

You can get to the lower sprocket by pulling the left side cover (you don't have to split the case). I am pretty sure you will have to pull the cam in order to get the chain over the end so you can drop it down and over the crank to remove.

I usually replace the cam chain whenever I do a top end job.

I'm redoing the top end on my 200x and I replaced the cam chain while I had it apart. It's not bad. Just remove the left side cover and pull the flywheel and it's right behind there.

That is good news as long as it don't require splitting the case. I swore after the last time that I had a timing chain slip I would never do a top end without replacing one but the guy I am working on this for is being really cheap. Anyway thank you for the help.
