NORTON - A Norton man whose eBay scam earlier this year fleeced 43 people out of more than $60,000 is suspected of going back to the online auction site to raise the money to pay court-ordered restitution.
But this time, Daniel Millican isn't accused of selling empty computer boxes on the popular auction site.
Norton Police Lt. Thad Hete said Millican -- with the help of his 15-year-old brother -- was selling motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles the two are accused of stealing from Norton, Franklin Township and Wadsworth.
Millican, 20, of Trotter Drive, is in the Summit County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond on charges of receiving stolen property, possession of criminal tools and breaking and entering.
His brother faces delinquency charges in Summit County Juvenile Court alleging the same acts.
On April 15, Millican pleaded guilty in Summit County Common Pleas Court to one count of grand theft and nine counts of theft, admitting that he had taken money from people across the country for laptop computers that didn't exist. The remaining counts in a 41-count indictment against Millican were dismissed. He was sentenced to five years on probation and was ordered to pay nearly $60,000 in restitution; half of that sum was turned over to the court from money found in two checking accounts shortly before Millican's arrest, Hete said.
On Friday, Andrew Lippert of Norton was driving north on Barber Road when he spotted someone riding his stolen 1999 Honda motorcycle. Although the motorcycle had been altered, Lippert said, he recognized a performance exhaust system and other details he had installed.
``I turned around, and we were riding in tandem,'' Lippert said.
The person on the motorcycle was Millican's 15-year-old brother. ``He introduced himself to me,'' Lippert said. ``I asked where he got the bike, and he said he bought it off eBay.''
By the time the two parted, Lippert knew that the motorcycle was being stored in a Barber Road storage unit rented by Daniel Millican. Lippert called police, who got a warrant to search the storage unit Monday.
Meanwhile, a Louisville police officer searching for motorcycle parts for his bike noticed an eBay auction for a 2002 Honda motorcycle. The description mentioned that the bike had no vehicle identification number or title.
Suspecting that the seller was offering a stolen motorcycle for auction, the officer -- along with Stark County Sheriff's Detective C.J. Stantz -- made contact with the seller to offer $4,200 for the $9,000 motorcycle. The seller, they discovered, was Millican. They arranged to pick up the bike from Millican at the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday.
But Millican didn't make the meeting. He was sitting in the Summit County Jail, having been arrested with his brother by Norton police on Monday after a search of the storage unit revealed three stolen motorcycles -- including Lippert's bike and the bike offered for sale on eBay -- and four stolen all-terrain vehicles.
``All of the (vehicle identification) numbers had been filed off,'' Hete said.
Also found in the storage unit was a walkie-talkie. It matches one found in a truck bed after a break-in at Budget Muffler, 4445 Cleveland-Massillon Road, on May 25.
Millican is due back in Barberton Municipal Court on July 9.
