View Full Version : Need 83/84 250r crank assembly... ideas??

Turns out my bearings are wasted and it would be easier to get a crank assembly over rebuilding what I have.
Problem is... I can't find one! Seems like everything out there is 85+ 250r.
Does Wiseco or Hot Rods make one for my trike? Or will I have to try and find a used one?

IDK if Wiseco or HR makes them, but they are definitely a reasonable solution... Your gonna have to email or "ask seller a question" over at EBAY and see what your options are.
There are some guys that rebuild them for a reasonable cost, but you'll still need a rod kit (100$??), gasket kit and 2 main bearings.
Like Jeff was saying, things get expensive VERY FAST, Not to mention that it seems like your unsure if you can even keep it because of this economy...
Like I always say, your 2000$ into a trike before you even realize it. But, 2000$ for a nice tight and reliable trike is a joke compared to the cost of the new machines and besides, they have TOO MANY WHEELS :D!!!
I hope you can keep it and get it running. I'd offer to help but it sounds like you got a hold of Jeff and hooking up with a local guy that knows his chit helps out allot.......
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I know I'll probably be stuck with it once I put the cash into it... but selling it in pieces doesn't appeal to me either.
I've found a HR rod kit for $80 and a complete gasket set for $40. I PM'ed 'dads' to see if All Balls sells a bearing/seal kit for the air cooled. Then, once I find out what overbore I'll need, I'll get a Wiseco kit off ebay for around $150.
Not terrible for a rebuild I guess long as Jeff doesn't find more wrong in there once he cracks the case open!

Hmm... well, I'm going to look into what it would cost to have a new rod put in my assembly. If not crazy I'll go that route, but once again, I'll keep you in mind! haha

You'll be OK, honestly - tranny problems are few and far between. They usually come from people holding it wide open and not using the clutch, jamming it down to a lower gear and just general abuse. These trannys are very well made and can handle tons of abuse, Lots of 25yo tranny bearings get reused with no issues at all.
Clutch parts and kickstarter parts are usually the next stuff that costs you some bucks to get it fresh again.
Thats why when I have a model I love and I know I won't sell, I buy every cheap lower end I can. I've bought complete 86/87 200X lower ends from 31$, 50$ to 90$ all of which I was obviously MORE than happy to pay for!!
Hopefully the rest of your lower end is good, there is something funky about that clutch pivot rod bolt (whats up with that thing Jeff??) but maybe the rest of it will be in good shape .
Good luck :D

I know the kick start only caught half the time... hope that isn't anything really bad!

I would make the watercooled crank fit...lol.. After seeing 1upfronts 380r build, the stoker crank would be my choice...

heh yah, that'd be nice, but my Jeep and my MR2 are both getting new motor builds... the less projects the better!

Is the 81/82 crank the same? I found some bottom ends on ebay for $120... bit much but if it's my only option...

What is the crank problem? Bad journals, stripped threads?
I'm really surprised that no one has a good base crank for you that you can put that rod kit in.......

Pitting where the oil seal on the stator side goes. The guy doing my motor is affraid it will suck in air... and on a fresh motor I really rather not lean it out and seize it!

OK, then turn it down on a lathe and sleeve it..... ??
Honestly, a good shop can do that in less than an hour.
Ya gotta do what ya gotta do!!

If the 81/82 cranks are the same I have one. I will find it. I ended up with a bottom end instead of rebuilding the other one. I got the crank off of ebay for 25 bucks plus shipping so you can have it for that if it fits.

i checked bike bandit and the numbers are the same. I will get it out of the garage and get you pics. Are you planning on putting a new rod on this crank. the bearings feel tight but it has been setting for a while and might have surface rust.

I have a Hot Rods rod kit for it. Long as there isn't any pitting on the shafts I'll take it. That's what is wrong with my current one and we don't want any air getting by those oil seals!

even getting a new crank, while its apart, i would recommend a rod kit and have a shop take it apart/press the new rod back together.
as for bearings, Racergirlsrock sells a great main bearing/seal kit, and for 30+shipping, cant be beat. heres a direct link to what u need:

All I was missing was my mains bearings.
