I think i might be able to buy a cheap 91 kx250 from a buddy. Its beat up a little but doesnt look like it would take a lot to get it going. He lost interest in the middle of a topend job so its partially taken apart right now. I might be able to get it for a little under 300$ and it comes with a new weiseco piston kit. I dont have a lot of experience rebuilding 2 strokes, but I am told that the cylinder is coated with chrome or nikasil or whatever so I will need to have a new sleeve (about 100$) pressed in the old cylinder, and then I can use the new weiseco standard sized piston kit. Does this sound right?
As far as I can tell and from what im told it will need a 100$ sleeve and a 35$ gasket kit. Anything else I need to look for? Are these alright bikes for their age?

Please don't sleeve, Git it re-nicked. All of those bikes were rockets if tuned well, and give up little if anything at all to the current 250's still being produced.

Where could I send the topend off to get re-coated and about how much does that usually run? Would the new standard size piston kit still work with this?

you need to send a new piston with the cylinder im pretty sure
check the classified ads ect... in the back of dirt rider magazene there are a few places that re plate
there's nothing wrong with sleeving bikes , sleeves were around long trailprotrailpro aluminum was , now there are a lot of great metals used!, Kustome Kraft can sleeve it , la sleeve makes kits,
AND THERE RE BOREABLE. OR A BIG BORE KIT COULD BE USED
do a search on the net you'll find a lot more than asking
