I have a 1985 Tecate 3. It starts first kick everytime. Idles for about 3 mins. then revs to holy hell and dies. Then i can kick it once and it starts. If you ride over bumps or up an incline it accelerates fine but when you return to idle it sputters and dies. This thing is driving me bannanas.

clogged petcock ? or filter ? i've had a clogged petcock do that, starve her for fuel, so she leans out, revs, and dies...

I was thinking along the same line, also my tri-z did that when the vacuum line for the fuel pump broke...

No fuel pump on the T3.

I was simply stating it sounds like it is lacking fuel. when my fuel pump lost vacuum, it lost fuel... It would be fine at idle but if you rode it hard it would rev really high like the throttle was stuck. and by having a cracked intake boot, or clogged fuel line some where it could cause the same problem.

Stop panicking

If it isn't consistent then it isn't an air leak or jetting. It's obviously a fuel delivery related problem. Start at the tank, can you turn on the petcock and fill a 1/2 gallon jug with no interuption?? NICE FLOW?? Is the cap venting??

Bumps, incline? That makes me think to look at the floats....

All and all, sounds simple to me. A simple problem that your overlooking.

When it F's up, IMMEDIATELY shut the gas off and see whats left in the bowl for fuel. Don't let it sit, just check it right then.....

Compare whats there for N mount of fuel when it's revving to the moon versus if you let it sit for 5 minutes and drain the bowl.

Piece of cake..........................

Yes I have to agree that it sounds like fuel issues. When a trike runs out of gas it revs to the moon for a few seconds running the bowl out and then dies. It sounds as if there is certaining something that is keeping the fuel flow from being constant.

Thanks for the help guys. I was thinking along the same lines as dirtcrasher because I left the petcock on one night and noticed a puddle of gas under the T3 like the needle valve was not shutting off the gas. That being said do you think the bowl is flooding the engine out. Also a little more info..... My petcock on the tank will not shut off so I installed another shutoff valve in the fuel line. Could this be a part of the problem. Just a little more info to help me out.....
