How do you release the chain tensioner on a 350x so I can take the timing gear off and take off the head? And when i put it all back together, how to i know where to put the stuff back on to make sure it is in time? Thanks.

Take the little bolt out of the outer end. Then take a small regular screw driver and insert it into the hole where the bolt was. Then twist the screw driver and the tensioner will release. Take it all the way back snugly and it will stay for instalation.

Well, I'm not sure what you mean by that. The only screws/bolst that are there are the two bols that hold the gear onto the cam. I took those off and the gear is lose in there but ther tensioners are keeping tention on the chain so i don't have any slack to take the chain off the gear to pull it out. I'm not sure what screw you are referring to. I can see the tensiones on each side of the timing chian down in the cavity but I don't know how to get to them. I just want to take the head off and see what everything looks like and clean up and carbon build up but I can't get past this point.
I espessially am going to lost putting it back together because I don't know what marks to go by to match everything back up to make sure the timeing is correct, either. :(

Rob, you need to download the manual. They're on here if you look for them, or stop by my house and I'll burn you a copy. I'm redoing the top end on my Big Red right now, and I'll hopefully have it together next weekend. It looks like the cam tensioner is on the back right of the cylinder on the 350X. Two bolts should completely remove it, or like Howdy said, if you remove the center bolt, you stick a screwdriver in there and back it off. I find it easier to remove it, and you get a new gasket in the top end kit anyways. Maybe I can stop by sometime soon and help you out.

I know, I have a manual and I should use it way more often. I have a bad habit of coming here for advice because the guys here are quick to answer and they also give a heads up for certain things to watch for. I'll consault with the manual more from now on and quit bugging you guys so much. i appreciate all your help.

Ah, I wasn't bustin your chops, I thought you didn't have a manual. I don't see how anyone could tear one apart and put it together without a manual, unless you do it more than a few times a year. Seriously though, we need to get together and ride up in Angola.

smvorndranI have some experience with working on certain 4 strokes from many years ago but I've not retain most of that knowledge. I'm much better with two sytrokes, even then I'll ask stupid questions. I used to be able to tear trhese suckers apart blindfolded and only need manuals for torque specs. I haven't done it for many many years and Old age is catching up to me though. lol
My end cap for the cam seem to be pretty chewed up. Can I still get those from Honda?
BTW, once I get my trikes up and going I'd love to make it up to Angola to ride with ya, bro. Sounds like fun!!

HowdyThanks your advice helped me get it apart. Appreciate it.
Now, do any of you guys know if I can still order the cam end cap from Honda dealers? mine isn't in very good shape. I see them on bike bandit but I would rather find one locally if possibl. Are thay hard to find?
The part I'm talking about is #2 in this diagram

I'm pretty sure it is still available. If not I probably have a extra.
How ever I have rarely ever seen one in bad shape unless it was out in the weather. I personally would probably just put plenty of sealant on the old and run it ( if it isn't too bad ).

Is it metal with a rubber coating? This one is a metal cap but the rubber around it is rotted. If it is just a metal cap then maybe someone already put some sealer on it and that's why it looiks bad. If that is the case then I'll just peel off the old rubber crap and put new sealent on it. the metal is in good shape.

the cap is nothing speicial....we used to throw those away and machine/polish aluminum caps for them.
other then looks there is nothing wrong with yours unless its out of round or something like that.
ether way you need to run sealer on it anyway.

OK, Thanks guys.
Hey Scott, did they have it in stock or did you have to order it in?

I had to order it, but it should be in by Wednesday. I probably won't be done reconditioning my top end until next weekend. I'm waiting on ebay piston rings, and I have the head at Mefferd's getting the valves & seats ground. I want this thing to run like brand new.

I'm in the same boat. I'm fixing up my 350X to be a rider so it isn't going to be perfect but I want to make it as right as possible. I have my Tecate for the days I feel like just going out and running like a raped ape. The 350X has the best of both worlds, it's fast enough to have fun yet it will run with no problems and if i feel like joy riding i can do that. So I don't have the desire to modify it much. I just want it to be a fun reliable machine. I'll catch up with ya one of these days and we'll go riding.

Rob,
If your using Hi-Tac for sealant then clean your current cap / plug real good and apply a couple coats of Hi-Tac to it. be sure to let each coat dry ( 10-15 minutes each coat ). You can also use silicon if you want, but be sure to install it right away after applying it. Silicon don't have the give that Hi-tac does.

Is that cam cap supposed to have a rubber bushing around it? Or is it just a cap? Mine has a ruber bushing around it, Should I discard that bushing and just use silicone or something in place of it?

They do have a rubber coating on them. So leave it on there.
