plz don tipe lik this k? I abosutely cannot stand that shorthand s-hit, its absoutely retarded. If your going to type something, take the extra 2 seconds and atleast type it in half assed english not some y r * so angry crap. From now on if you type a message like that to me, I will not answer it. I would encourage other members of the board to observe the same thing. Typing like that is not "Trendy" or "Cool". It makes you look like an idiot. Please refrain from typing in shorthand....or I'm going to be prematurely bald and unable to speak from pulling my hair out and screaming at the top of my lungs.

Here, here! I wholeheartedly agree! Take the time to use what you've learned in school! Speak and write with intelligence, and others will treat you with intelligence and respect.
If you can't do that, use a spell checker...

Typing in all capitol letters is as bad ( or rude ) also. A lot of times I just take enough time to hit delete.

I thought I was the only one who didn't understand! I went to college for 6 years and when I first saw it I thought I was retarded because I didn't get it. I type a whopping ten words a minute and I try to write legibly and spell things correctly. I agree!

Yes, lol, lmao, lmfao, ect is fine. What gets Billy, myself, and others is typing like this:

Wrong way: Yr 2 young 2 know what it wz like trailprotrailpro.
Right way: Your too young to know what it was like before.
I didn't type every word in short hand just enought to show what was meant.

I agree too! Now, to be honest, I type fast on a laptop and get misspelled words, but after I view it, if I made a mistake, I edit it. I do give a 100% effort. Dont get me wrong, wife looks over my shoulder and says..."Hon, ummmm.....spell check" Ya,ya! LOL...Anyways, Give a full effort and typo will happen, but its ok and all good.
Now, grammar, thats a whole new subject ;)

It sure is nice to see so many people agree with this. I can not see why so many people will go out of their way to appear so stupid and lazy. It actually takes less effort to simply use propper english. I think some of them have done it so long they are stuck in idiot gear.

If we let this text (message short hand) become normal, we will be paying for school books to be printed in it in 4 years like ubonics or spanish. Not that Spanish is bad. If you live hear more than a year learn English. If I lived in Mexico I would speek Spanish .

Allot of people use "short hand" while text messaging someone on a cell phone. (the more you can say in less words the less money you spend) When you text on a cell phone it looks like its done in retard but if your around it enough you will understand it 100%.

My friends hate it when i spell it out like we are on here. It cost them 0.10 per text to look at it then 0.10 per text to respond. It adds up real fast. I talked to a friend for 1 hour using text messaging. I ended up giving her 20.00 for just the text messages i sent her. This is what it looks like (i gtg eat som fod *Edited**Edited* i go 2 wrk 2day ttyl) 40 spaces What was said (i have to eat something before i go to work today i will talk to you later.) 74 spaces You are only allowed 137 total spaces on some phones. that includes spaces, punctuation, letters, and numbers.

You don't get charged per post here so you may as well do it rite and save people from trying to make sense out of it. There is a time for "short hand" however its not here.

At risk of dredging up an old thread, something worth remembering is that the internet is worldwide, and english isn't everyones first language. If a post is typed properly, there's a chance that anything they don't understand can be referenced somewhere and made sense of. It's even quite interesting how different our English use of english is to yours!

And that my friend is why I wish it was mandatory for every person to learn at least two languages. My favorite English phrase would have to be "knocked up". "What time would you like the bellman to come by and knock you up?" Sounds so dirty by U.S. standards.

Capatilization is also very important. For example...

Fabiodriven helped Jack off his mule. Now if Jack were not capitalized, Fabiodriven would have a completely different job.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not a stickler for punctuation & I suck at spelling... English was always my worst subject, but I do hope a majority of my posts are readable... my favorite punctuation: ... - its kinda like the f word... so versatile... it works for a period, comma, semi colon, & sometimes a question mark... its more like a Captain Kirk... dramatic... pause... just to let the previous statement sink in before the next is read...

This is a good thread. Having never read it, I took the time to go through the entire thing. Its interesting, especially in the beginning, to see the influence that the introduction and proliferation of texting has had on language. This thread is a kind of time capsule, as it started before texting was mainstream. I love the english language, and the written word. I'm a huge fan. At times, I try to write so precisely that I will think about what i've written while lying awake at night. Other times, (mostly on 3ww) i'll lose the caps and drop an "ain't" or two. to me, this is a casual atmosphere, and should be treated as such. I agree that ebonics are a detriment to society and the "your/you're" misuse drives me absolutely crazy. What is important to remember is that we do not own the language. It is a common error of the middle aged to think otherwise. We can do our best to pass on our conceptions and "rules" of language but it won't do a damn bit of good. Language is going to change. it always has, and it always will.

Look thou be true; do not give dalliance
Too ... much the rein: the strongest oaths are straw
To the fire i' the blood: be more abstemious,
Or else, good night your vow!

Thats billy shakes. If you know what the hell he's talking about there, you're a better man than I. My point is that we write and talk differently than previous generations, just as subsequent generations will differ from us. We may not like it, but we cannot stop it. The feelings are compounded at this particular point in history because a technological advance has accelerated the change. texting, the typed word, is the new standard. i think back to all the time i spent with the nuns trying to teach me the palmer method. what a waste. pens, paper, books, will all soon be gone. we'll be left with screens. its not so bad, really. think of everything you can do! think of how many people can easily communicate. its unprecedented in human history. so we've gotta deal with a few lol's and OMG's. Get over it. I think that if we sat down twenty years ago, and i told you that in 2013, the main form of communication among the youth in America was the written word, you'd have told me i was crazy. look at us now. "selfie" is in the dictionary. thats my hangover rant for the week. cheers.
