I'm setting this up for a friend of mine so here's the deal: My buddy had purchased this 200X and since he's had it he's been having trouble keeping it running. After trying for some time he can get it to run and keep it running but only with the choke on. After he lets it sit for a few hours, he can no longer get it to start up. He thought that his carb was bad so he had it cleaned and still the same problem. He then went and picked up a brand new carb and for the first few days, it fired up instantly. Since then, he has had the same issues as before. He can get it to fire up but needs to keep the choke on. Once it is shut down, he cannot fire it back up right away or even hours later. However, if he tries it the next day, fires up again.
Anyone have any suggestions or similar problems that can help my friend solve these issues? He's on the verge of getting rid of it unless he can figure out his problem. I appreciate any and all suggestions/answers. I'd hate for him to have to sell it for something that may be minor. Maybe it's minor, I certainly do not know. Thanks for the help.

make sure your valve timing is correct, i have had similar issues myself, i blamed the carb when it was really my timing. if its not the timing i would have to say it is an electrical issue

take the fuel tank cap off and see if it has issues still. sounds like a fueling issue.

If it's a 83-85 200x then check the stator. It's possible the exciter coil is going bad and may need replace.
Test: You have 2 wires coming form the stator. One of them is a Black with a Red stripe. Unplug it from the harness and using a ohm meter test the ohms ( 1 lead to terminal, one lead to motor ). They run best when the ohm reading is 200-240. The specs for the 200x say around 100 ( I think ) to 240. The lower the ohm reading, the weaker the spark. Weaker spark means harder starting and fouled plugs.
Hope this helps.

I agree with all........ I would have to say it could be the valves first. Then go to the timing, although if it fires your timing is close and should be OK. The stator sounds like the issue to me. I just went through all this with my own and if she is not firing all electrical components properly and the valves are not adjusted correctly it can be a real pain in the Ass............ I would get a manual, wich is downloadable, there is a ton of usefull info.
