I have an 85 Tecate that cranks and idles fine. I ride it for about 5 mins and the POS just stalls. Kick it once and it starts right up only to stall again mins later. I have thoroughly cleaned the carb(Keihin PJ). I installed a fram gas filter to prevent an clogs of pilot or main. Inspected the reeds, intake boot, float levels. Everything seems good. POS has not run right since I had it. I'm almost to the point of cutting my losses and parting this thing out. Can any of you guys help me out.

is your petcock flowing fuel freely?

yeah has a good consistant flow of gas. Would a bad stator cause this type of problem.

That would be my only guess. Tecates are known for stator issues.

i am of the thinking a bad stator is a bad stator all the time.
Not necessarily true. I had a bad stator on an '86 Tecate I owned in '88 that would run when it wanted to, then foul plugs and take 2-hours to get cranked again. Once cranked, you could ride half a day......if it was a GOOD day, or more likely ride for 5 minutes and push for 20 minutes.
When my current '85 Tecate's stator went out.....it was down for the count.
A new stator fixed both machines.

I'm going to put the old multimeter on the stator tomorrow. It's doing things very similar to what dixiePB is describing. I can crank it easily and idle it until warm. I ride maybe 5 minutes and soon as I get off the throttle down to idle it stalls. One kick and most times it fires right up only to stall again. It appears to me once the bad component gets to a certain temp it is causing the problem. I don't know just brain storming.

stator problems can be a pain to troubleshoot.. I fought ignition problems on my LT250 for months.. the stator tested good so I overlooked it as my problem.. My bike had great spark and cranked right up every time.. It was ridable but would not pull at full throttle under a load.. so I thought for months that it was a fuel delivery or jetting problem.. The bike never revved out well the whole time I owned it and it became increasingly worse after I added more compression, bigger carb, and a better pipe... I played with timing, jets, petcocks, fuels, etc. until I was ready to give up... Then one day I swapped stators with one from my buddys machine and imediatley had the fastest 250 I've ever ridden... So Yes a "good" stator can be "bad"... The CDI or coil could also be faulty and still somewhat function...

I am kinda going through a similar experience;
Last time I rode it, it would rev up on its own even though throttle was steady, then it would bog and die. It would start up immediately. I would ride for 3-5 minutes and repeat. Plug fouled once that day before this began. Moved to a different riding area so it cooled off. Was able to ride again until it got hot and it started revving (like it was running out of gas), bogging, stalling.
Last time it ran, it started fairly easy and smoked real bad, bogged in the mid to upper rpms, and was deemed unridable.
Sat over the winter. Now it doesn't start, just backfires out the exhaust.

Hope to figure it out soon. I will be happy if it just the stator.

.
Did the smoke smell more like transmission oil? You know what I'm thinking: Bogging, free-revving, fouling, smoking more than usual......sounds like crank seals to me.
Excessive oil dripping from the exhaust?

Sound's like to me it's got an air leak or something like that. What did the plug look like anyway's??

When I said it smoked, I meant it made a new cloud in the atmosphere and I couldn't see across the street.
Kinda what I am thinking. I drained the oil and never put any oil back in it. So now it only backfires like it is lean and just sucking air through the clutch side crank seal.
I was going to put oil in it and see if it starts. If it starts and smokes then there's the answer.
If that's the case I am moving on to the KX500 lump I have. The NOS $59 PSI pipe for it should show up today anyway.

What you are describing sounds exactly like what my trike did when the stator went, to a "T".

I just put a complete (known working) KX250 electrical system on it and it started on the first kick.

Think I found the problem guys. Took the stator cover off before I hooked up the old mulitmeter and I found the flywheel to be very rusty, but the magnets are still in great shape. However the stator itself was a rusty mess. The ignition coil and lighting coil both had severe oxidation. What do you think guys? Should I try removing the oxidation on the stator or buy a new one. The flywheel seems like it can be salvaged with a little elbow grease or should I buy a new one. I tried to upload pics but they were to big.

My opinion, it ain't worth skrewing around with. I'd just buy a whole new Ricky Stator rotor/stator and run it. Alot of guys have had issues with the Ricky Stator stator, but mine works flawless.
