View Full Version : Has anybody ever routed an 85 350X clutch cable to run like the 86's?

I'm in the rough draft stage right now but i think i have it. I had to fabricate a bracket and drill 2 holes in the spot on the case that is just "there" and i had to use the in case clucth lever from an 86. Right now I have it thrown together to see it it works. So far it works great. I have washers for spacers but if all turns out correctly, I will have the proper parts and spacers to allow it. this way if people want to re route their 85 clutch cable away from the exhaust, they can do it. I'll keep you updated on the progress.
I DID do a search to see if this has been discussed and it came up with zero results, just to get that out of the way. Then again, I could still be late to the party on this one. I seem to be good at figuring things out, posting and finding out someone beat me to it, many moons ago.:D

Post some pics when you can. I'd like to see how you ran it. The clutch cable on mine must get "overheated" when I run it wide open for a little bit and the lever starts to get really hard to pull. A few seconds later it frees right up. I'd like to re-route the cable to get rid of that problem.

the 85 motors have the 2 mounting holes in the center case for the 86 clutch cable bracket but they arnt taped out.
so you just thread them and use an 86 clutch arm and you have a cable thats far from your pipe.
heres my 85 motor with the 86 cable

Thanks Swingin'!! So I need:
- 1986 clutch cable
-1986 clutch arm
-1986 clutch cable bracket
Right?
Thanks Again!

yup that's about all you need.
you just need to drill and tap the 2 holes for the cable bracket and i normally just grind the weld off the 85 arm and spin it where it needs to be and reweld.

JohnYou can do it that way but i chose a different method for doing it because that method has drawbacks. For starters, we don't know exactly how strong those mounting holes really are. they are there but nothing was mounted to them so we don't know if they have the strength to take long term abuse of pulling the clutch. Chances are they are plenty strong and that is a good way to do it. But we don't know.
But other drawbacks that it has, it forces you to use the 86 350X clutch cable. What i am devising is much more adjustable and will allow for an array of different types of clutch cables to be used because it has an extra point of adjustability.
Both methods will essentially work and should hold up just fine but the way i am working on mine just offers that extra adjustment to be able to use different cables that may, in the future, become easier to obtain then a stock 350X cable.

those are the same bosses use on the 86 motors so no worry there, and my way you can use a 250x cable as well but i like the 86 450x cables better.
i have bin doing this since the 90s so im sure it holds up.

I might just go with that set up then because it would be so much easier then the bracket i was going to fabricate.
Your sig says you raced quadracers for 6 years and that surprises me because you come across as an anti 2 stroke guy in some of your posts. How well did you do in your racing career? were you competitive and place high?

Thanks for the info. That arm is expensive (about $35) so I'll grind the weld off and re-weld it. I've got some odds and ends to order soon so I'll add the cable and bracket to the list. No worries with drilling and tapping here, I have all the taps and dies in my toolbox. The best thing I got out of having been a professional mechanic for 12 years+ is a complete set of tools.

i raced 250-open 2 stroke A class in the 90s....i did betterr then most and it was odd for me not to take home money.
