1984 200ES still runs like crap

According to the service manual the pulse generator alignment marks should line up with the F mark on the flywheel. I verified this is correct. The engine runs but it pops like it is missing and it wont idle correctly. You can give it some gas and it will run fast for a few seconds and then the RPMs drop down and then it dies. The whole time it is missing. Not a steady miss but it pops out the muffler periodically. Is this problem carb related or something else?

I checked the adjustment and they are within spec

i set mine to TDC and set the alignment to that. works fine for me.

Sounds more like carb trouble to me.

I agree with Louis... Sounds like your throttle cable is binding somewhere, and your carb needs a rebuild... Just my $.02

I had similar problems with my big red, check the spark plug wire, and the boot, if there's bad contact there, it'll cause its to spit and sputter and bog down then rev right up.
