Well I decided to try and get my 85 250r fixed up a little for my maiden voyage to TF and possibly Smith Road. So I had to do something about the rearend, axle is tweaked a little, rotor shot, brake hub and wheel hubs have slop. So I was undecided which route to take on this rearend rebuild and 85 seems to be the odd year out so I ended up going with the 86 style setup. So I called Mike at HRE and had him make me a 86 250r swinger, I ordered a Durablue Eliminator X-33 Pin Drive with Billet Hubs axle, then picked up a billet carrier and a Janssen anti-fade brake hub also some All Balls kits from Dads here on the boards(Thanks Dads). I already had the Proggressive Suspension rear shock spring from when I bought the fork springs.

I did run into a couple roadblocks already in the disassembly stage. The axle nut, some aftermarket locking type, will not loosen. I tried heating it with a propane torch and yanking on it with a 3ft pipe wrench a few times and it won't budge. So I decided to skip that and removed the chain, brake caliper and master and shock and linkage. Then I went for the swingarm pivot bolt, no go. I got it to turn and got the nut off but the bolt is stuck. I heated it with the propane torch and hit on the nut with the sledge and it didn't move. So I am gonna go get some Mapp gas and try heating with that and hit on it some more. If that fails might have to cut it out.

After I got the shock out I noticed it was stamped on the top "1989" so I am gonna guess its a 1989 trx shock and linkage that someone possibly swapped in before I got it. I am dropping my shock and the spring off later today to get rebuilt. Hopefully they can tell me if it is a 1989 shock or not when I take it in. So here are some pics of my new goodies :w00t:

The swingarm cost me $475. It is stock length with skidplate mounts and uses the stock front chain slider. Let me just say it is a work of art!!! The welds are flipping beautiful !!!

Durablue axle $499 (Rocky Mountain w/ promo spend $500 get $100 off, so it cost more like $399)
Carrier $120 (Ebay)
Janssen antifade $149 (Ebay)
New pivot bolt&nut $39.44 (Ebay)
Braking rear rotor $75 (Ebay)
07 YZ450F front caliper $45 (Ebay used, gonna use for rear caliper)
All Balls swingarm bearings $55 (Dads)
Lonestar Brake stay kit $55.79 (Dennis Kirk)

I can't think of anything else at the moment.

I might be taking my footpegs to HRE and have him fab up some wide ones with kick-ups. If I do I'll let you guys know that have 85 250r's.

^^^ Ditto that. I loved mine when I had it. Damn stock shock rode like a caddy and still took larger bumps/jumps with ease.

i seen you mite be heading out to Smith Rd. maybe we could take my truck and trailer out and save some coin on gas. I plan on racing my trx250r out there and maybe my 85 atc250r if it is working.

I bought it a year ago off ebay for $60.

Yeah if I get this finished in time and test it out I would like to go. I'll get back to you when I get a little closer to being finished.

Place I took the shock to said one and a half to two weeks till its done. Plus I still need to get the pivot bolt out and rebuild my front caliper I have torn apart. My buddy gave me some galfer brake lines off his 03 CR250 and they are almost a perfect fit on the 250r. I will post pics of them when its back together. I still need to decide if I should buy new reeds for the rad valve thats on it or buy new VF3 setup. I was lookin at the pro series reeds and they are half the price of a VF3, so I was thinkin might aswell go the rest of the way and get the VF3, I dunno.

Just a quick update got the swinger bolt out yesterday. I heated the rear motor mount where the pivot bolt goes thru with mapp gas and gave it some whacks with the sledge hammer and it finally moved. Then my dad got out the air hammer/chisel with a blunt end and it pushed it out. The lower linkage bolt was stuck too and the air hammer pushed it right out.

Well its together, no pics of it finished but some from the other night.
I put on a crf rear master but I don't know if its gonna stay. I can't get it to pump up tight it just seems real spongy. Maybe its too small for the yfz front caliper I put on the back or something. But heres some of the progress.

1st is the crf rear master I put on.
2nd clearence between it and swinger
3rd backside view
4th brake stay modded for yfz front caliper
5th IMS pegs
6th Linkage and shock back on.
