Hey again guys. I just picked up a 1984 Kawasaki tecate, and it needs a lot of work. One real problem I noticed is that the rear hubs are welded onto the axle on the back side of the hub. Does anyone know how I could get them off? It would be pretty hard to grind them inside there, because there is not enough room. Any ideas are welcome, because I dont know what to do about it. I was looking at my spare 200x axle, and they looked to be almost the same. They were the same length, and about the same width too. Anyone ever did this swap?

One more thing I was wondering is if there is a rear shock rebuild kit? Would I be better off just buying a new used shock? Thanx again. ?

yea, i am pretty sure that the swap is possible, a 200x axil is about 2 inches shorter than a tecate axil, i had to knock out a board in my shed when i got my tecate cus i needed more clearance after i sold my 200x..you would need to take off one of them to get the axil out thou so you might just wanna get a different carrier unless you want to cut off one side of the axil...you could also try grinding it but that might not work, i dont know what year 200x axil you have but my 200x akil was a good 2 inches shorter than my tecate one

If you can get one of the hubs off (Shouldn't be too hard with a decent sized air die grinder and shaped stone) you can pull the axle through, and then have the other one done the right way by taking it to someone with a lathe and let them cut the welds off. I've had to do this a couple times...

Why in the world would someone weld the wheels to the hubs? What some idiots won't do to their poor machines!

you probably could get the shock rbuilt, but ifits in real bad shape you'd be better off getting a new one. I think works sells a shock for a t-3.

The reason that the guy welded them on was because the nuts that hold the hub onto the axle must have fallen off, and he didnt want to replace them. What an idiot.

Well, I'll have to try those ideas, Honda atc. Thanx, and I'll keep it posted as it goes along. I'm going to try to post pics up on the board soon.

First unbolt the hub from the wheel, it'll give you a little bit more elbow room. Do you have a grinder thats not on a bench? Electric, or air? Disc or Die grinder? if you got a die grinder run down to your local auto parts store or home improvment store or whatver and get on the triangle shaped stones with a point on it, it'll help get around that some. I've seen hubs welded before... all those people had atleast enough brains to only do one side so you could take the axle out and work onthe welded side without much problem

They are welded on because they are not the right hubs!

Stock 84 Tecate hubs are round. those look square with rounded corners. possibly home-made? Those rims appear to be 8" steel rims, which also was not stock.

All Tecate axles are pretty narrow stock. I don't know if I'd like all that power running on two inch shorter 200x axle. I turn the rims around on my 86 KXT to aid in storage. I rode it one time with 'em turned around. very tippy!

I think I'd start with another carrier (with internal spacer tube), put in new bearings and seals, find a stock or wider axle from ebay or whatever, and get some stock 84 hubs. That way you can run 8" rims, though I don't know if the ones you have will fit since I've no idea what hubs those are on it now. At the very least I'm afraid you have to have another axle or just leave it how it is. Maybe you can save that axle by carefully removing the weld around the hubs.

The one thing I know of that makes short work of chicken scratches like that is a torch. If you or someone else is good with a torch I would think it would be an easy fix. you would have to be pretty careful though, if you want to salvage that axel.

I would cut off the whole axle and replace it with a +2 and some ITP rims. Who would weld the hubs on  :D
