Well I stopped into chat thursday and told everyone I bought myself a new truck. 1997 Chevy s-10 extended cab, 2wd, 110,000 miles but a lot of highway miles (or so were told, and I believe it by the way the truck drives and runs and has been maintained). So I've owned the thing for 4 days, and I'm going on the highway 65 (5 under) following my friend so we could go sell his car. I start to hear a slight tick sound so I turn off all the accessories and it continues and gets worse when you let off the gas. So the sound just kept getting worse and worse, so I pulled off and parked her hoping not to cause damage. Got it towed home by a friend, and have to look into things. I am flabbergasted at the entire situation, and it's just now sinking in, and I have to look into a few things. So if anyone knows of any recalls on these trucks or common problems or any ideas I would appreciate it. I will try to find what caused this if it kells me, because a chevy 4.3 jsut doesnt start knocking for no reason, they're to reliable, our other one with 170,000 has no knocks and burns no oil. Thanks guys..

A guy I work with just had his blow up. The remote oil filter hose cracked or broke I'm not sure but it was trashed.

Nothing is going to be bulletproof. Things will wear after time no matter how much you maintain something. Someone can change there oil/airfilter in there car, truck, bike, atv etc..and tell the ''new'' buyer that its been maintained. Theres a saying when buying something used, its called ''Buyer Beware''. Take the truck to a local dealer or local mechinac and get it checked out.

it could be lifter noise due to low oil. if I remember correctly there shouldnt be a remote oil filter on that. that was only for the 4x4 cause of the torsion bars. i think the egr valve gets carbon in it and sticks open. that would cause it to spark knock. there was a procedure for preventing that. you should take it in. there may not be anything all that badly wrong with it.

Well the dealership we got it from took it in and is looking at it. There is a major engine problem because we found metal shavings in the oil. The engine was very tight because when you downshifted (automatic) the thing would throw you foward, so the guy couldn't have beat on it THAT hard. We were thinking that maybe he dubbed it up before he sold it and that's why we think he took 3200 for it and he wanted 4000. The oil was fine too. I thought it might have been spark knock too, but that bad of a knock and there was no check engine lights on is waht told me it's something major.
