I am doing my first tri-z bottom end rebuild. I remembered everything except a few key points. Which way do the crank seals go in?(Spring facing toward or away from crank?), and which one goes to what side(Large Inside Diameter/smaller ID?)??????

thanks

Bud, your just asking for trouble...... Working off memory is never a sound method.

The seal spring goes towards whatever is trying to escape, albeit air, oil, fuel etc etc. The flat side faces out.

As far as where the smaller ID goes, just look at WHAT slides into it. Probably a spacer/collar on the clutch side and just the crank itself on the other side unless it to has a spacer/collar.

Your 1st rebuild and no manual?? Get a manual before you make a stupid mistake and cost yourself another teardown - will ya??!! What are you gonna do for torque specs??

I have a service manual but its hard to tell from the pic which side the spring faces. Thanks for your help.................

crank seals go in last,, after the cases are together...the one with the bigger hole is for the right side , the smaller hole is for the stator side,,spring in.

torque your clutch basket nut to 45-50 fp,& bend the tab over,, head nuts from 20-22,,, jug nuts as hard as you can with a open end wrench!

why would you put the seals in last? it makes it soo much harder. plus on a tecate you can't do it that way.

after you press the bearings in, put the seals in. its so much easier to get them flat, without having to find a deep enough tube or socket to go over the crank.

the tri-z's i;ve done were a pain in the arse getting the seals in. tight mofo's.

also put blue loctite on the od of the seals when you press them in. helps keep them in place

I heat the bearing race on the crank bearings (lightly!) and the crank will slip Right In.. both sides,, makes the whole job faster. you dont need a press for a tri z motor.
