2007 RMZ450R FCR carb with 400ex thumb throttle
2005 CRF450X tank with acerbis shrouds
86 ATC250R forks and triples machined to fit crf stem
05 CRF450R Fork stem and bearings
86 ATC250R Front hub assembly including brakes
2005 TRX450R sub frame
2005 TRX450R rear fenders
2005 TRX450R Swingarm with billet carrier with double wide bearings
400ex rear shock peps valved
2005 TRX450R axle with G-Force Hubs
2005 TRX450R seat pan and foam with CRF450R seatpan and foam molded to fit tank and covered in marine grade carbon fiber vinyl
2005 TRX450R pivot bolt(shortened and rethreaded) with custom machined spacer/bushing

Did you seriously buff a discontinued tire? Man buy a cheng shin for that.
Looks like solid work though. Good job.

My jaw was on the table over the tire as well, roached a good meat. To each his own---selling that tire could have netted some dollars though! Nice build, I like the looks of 450 trike conversions!

Tire wasnt in very good shape had some good size chuncks out of some of the lugs already and all i did was make it fit my purpose better. And the swinger pivot bolt is a trx450r bolt, that pic is before the spacer bushing was made.

why wouldnt it work?
here are some better pictures of the shock and its mount, if you look close enough you can see my carb delima, this was cause by my lack of budget and not having the motor when I fabed up the shock mount.

Got enough room for a foam clamp-on airfilter?
audioworks04
05-13-2009, 09:53 AM
with out building my own tank like jason did I had to keep the factory mount inorder to mount my tank and my seat height is still close to a 250r and feels good sitting on it. If you look close you can see where my seat has a bump in it up by the tank, that where the factory mount is.
As far as the clamp-on foam filter do you have a model # or anything i could look up?

goto the k&n site and you can search my dimensions
Billy Golightly
05-13-2009, 11:43 AM
I wouldn't suggest a K&N because they dont flex very well fitting around frame rails and stuff, they are pretty rigid. Uni makes the best flexible foam airfilters in my opinion. http://www.unifilter.com/
Its hard for me to reccomend any particular models because I dont know the dimensions your having to work with. You need to measure the back of the carb for starters, and find out what size it is. Then look on the Uni site under Universal fit and find a filter with that diameter clamping area, and then figure out the overall length and foam diameters you need.

any worries about running a uni with no box? This will be ridden 99% in sand.
put a pre filter on it and you shouldnt run in into any problems

Finally rode it tonight, just around the block and it is rediculous, didnt even get out of first. Amazing torque and seems very ridable. First ride no rear brake was really sketchy, but got that all fix up tonight. Tomarrow going to button everything up and go ride some trails just to make sure that it doesnt just fall appart(not really worried just a check). Then headed to the dunes Monday with it and my 250r.

Cool but i dont understand whats holding the rear fenders and the seat up?
audioworks04
05-16-2009, 03:08 PM
I am using the stock 04/05 trx sub frame that i shortened slightly to get my fit right. so the seat and rear fenders are held on just as the trx fenders and seat are with the exception of the front of the seat also slides over a latch on the tank also

Heres some pick of it, got the air box fixed with at least a temp fix need to fidgure out a better way to mount the air filter, but its functional. The rear brake is done, and go the radiator braces mounted, with the fluidynes that i have they are thicker than stock, so they were a pain to mount.

Cool project, it is going to be very difficult to keep the front end down.
I would definately make sure that filter is well oiled, and has a pre filter on it ..and make a splash guard / improvised airbox of some sort. Just a plain K&N in that position in wet or dusty conditions will suck dirt in a hurry. I would much rather see a well oiled UNI foam clamp on in its place...also with a pre filter and splash guard
Nice NX250 and vintage jetskis too!

Plan on running a outerware, just havent found one local and dont have time order on so hopefully i can find one in Waynoka. Was thinking about a splash guard, but wasnt sure about it, might try and fidgure it out.
As far as keeping the front end down your deffinatly right. Im using the 04-05 swinger which is shorter than the 06 and up. Wasnt aware of this at the time when I got this one. May be changing it out later on after I see how it rides, or maybe just change gearing right now im stock for an 06 and up and seems to have plenty of torque.
Thanks for the comments on my NX, i love it gets almost 70mpg and very very reliable.
And the 87 js550 jet skis in the back ground are one of my other money hogging hobbies but also very fun the white one is my buddies that I painted this last winter and we cut out the graphics. The red is mine and far from stock. Then there is an 85 also on a stand back there that needs rings really really bad.

Get a "DryCharger" from K&N. Thier just like a outerware but also repel water.

Just got back ran great had to change my jetting but that was expected. Running a 168 main now, but need a different leak jet just cuts out on hard throttles.
Lost my rear brake lever bolt on the last ride, so just one fix left to do and some small cosmetic stuff. Heres some video and pics.

That seat reminds me alot of Gene Simmons tongue. lol
Hows it ride with all that rake in the front end?
audioworks04
05-25-2009, 05:43 PM
rides great dont really think it has much rake in it, pretty much as tight as it an get without the front fender hitting the frame. Think it just looks like it due to the low rear end. Never had any problems at all in the dunes in the handling department. Actually if you watch the video I was out riding the yfz450 that my buddy was riding that has the helmet cam on.

still have not been able to get my jetting right. Not sure but it could be my intake. If anyone has an good knowledge of fcr carbs or crf motors and specifically the leak/ap jet it would be greatly appreciated. I am currently running a 168 main with the accellerator arm wired, an it just flat falls on it's face in the midrange.

Nice build bud!!, just for trying you get my award :D
Not everyone has the means, desire, funds or time to do things absolutely perfect. Looks like your 1st shot worked out great for you and you'll be tweaking it from there until you feel it's spot on

Finally got her to run right. Been messing with jetting and needles and the leak jet, even went so far as to buy an R&D Power Pump 2, but nothing fixed my huge bog in the mid range. Had an extra CDI laying around, so it threw it on there really quick and she ran like a charm.
Ill put more pictures up here shortly.

So I keep breaking my sub frame and I am sick of it, this is a common problem in the trx450r world also and I am currently using a modified trx450r aluminum subframe. I think its all the moguls and woops in the dunes I think that are killing it. I dont own a tig so everytime I need to fix something on it is a huge ordeal of taking it apart and taking it into a shop of a guy that I know so that I can use his tig and his schedule is getting less and less flexible. I have come to the decision that I going to build my own subframe out of mild steel so that I can take my time making it and get all my brackets where I need them to be and gusset the hell out of it. I am just not sure what thickness I should go with, chromoly would be nice, but yet again need a tig to do it correctly from what I have heard/read. I Plan to build something like this one from houser. http://www.houser-racing.com/SPD/044901-honda-trx450r-2004-09--subframe--seat-lowered-3-4--from-stock-height--80000E31-1257442302.jsp or this one from walsh race http://www.walshracecraft.com/#/trx-450r-2/4530964845 I plan to use square tubing rather than round due to the easy of working with. I know that this will obviously weigh slightly more than the aluminum one, but the trike is already super light.
Anyone have some recommendations on what to use, this will all be welded with my 220 miller mig?
OZQUAD44
03-05-2010, 09:00 AM
Aluminum subframes are very ordinary after they have been welded up. The heat generated by the welder affects the aluminium so its never the same again.
I think your going down the right path with a steel one, although I would be steering towards chromoly if you could because you will be able to go with a thinner wall thickness for the same strength. If your subframe is based on a TRX450R subframe, why don't you buy one of the aftermarket ones that are already being made and modify it accordingly? It will save you a heap of time.
I'm no expert, but I did a TIG course and chromoly was the easiest material to weld out of the lot of them, very stable at hight temperatures.
audioworks04
03-09-2010, 03:53 PM
I could have used an aftermarket trx subframe, but they are very very pricey, around $600. I would have liked to have used chromoly, but I no longer have easy access to a tig like I did when I originally built this, so that makes it complicating. I am not worried about my tig skills, but the lack of a machine makes it hard.
I ended up using 1" 14ga mild steel square tubing for my upper tubes with 3/4" on the lowers. It did take significantly longer than I had planned, but it turned out great and I am very happy. Also am now using an 85/86 ATC250R airbox and intake tube that worked out great. Headed to Little Sahara Waynoka Oklahoma this weekend, so it will get torture tested.

Nice job. looks like your subframe ended up turning out really well. Looks very professional , and suppose it cost a lot less than 600 USD.
Did you play with the angle of the seat any? Do you have a picture of the whole bike back together with you new subframe?
audioworks04
03-10-2010, 11:59 PM
Some pictures of it back together.....
I did not change the angle of the seat, I love how low my seat height is and how low that makes my center of gravity. When I ride the TRX450R's I feel like its gonna tip over. I matched my seat height to the same as the 85/86 atc250r and it works out perfect. This is however what lead me to have the long seat that I have, but thats okay sometimes I used the whole seat depending on how agressive I am riding.

I really appreciate how you have kept a low seat height, and I like the idea of the long seat, its just a little out aesthetically speaking. Witch detracts from, what is, an awesome build.
But given the height of the old shock mount I suppose there is very little you can do about it.
But I don't want to make it sound like I'm all negative, Excellent build you have there.
audioworks04
03-12-2010, 12:06 PM
No offence taken. The only other way that I think I would have been able to achieve the low seat height would have been to make my own tank, like jason did, I just don't have the skills or tools necessary to do something that in depth....yet. I agree that it does somewhat distract from the overall cleanly ness of the bike, but I wanted it to be more comfortable and easy switch over from my R rather than just be all about looks. Might try and make my own seat pan or modify this one again sometime, just no time right now. Some day I will build another and use what I have learned from this build to make the next one better. Thanks for the comments and complements.
