Blown 331

Posting this for my cousin. The connecting rod went out on his 1988 XR250 about 5 or 6 years ago. He pulled it apart at that time and it just sat apart until about 2 weeks ago when he finally bought a new rod. Well he's got it back together and is low on power. The timing is way retarded.
The way he explained it, the ignition pick up is splined the crankshaft (I think) on the clutch side. He installed this pick up pointed straight up with the connecting rod. So I think that is making the plug fire right at top dead center when is should actully be advanced a bit. He is thinking of pulling it apart and advancing a tooth to see what happens but that might not be enough? Its a lot of work to keep pulling down to try it. Anyone know for sure how to do it or have a downloadable manual?
