85-86 250r POS rebuild started

Well I bought a honda atc250r that was sold as a 86 and just noticed it has an 85 carb on it. I got the 250r bug after lurking around this site for a few months. I thought I needed another project, like I already didnt have enought going on. The 250r is beyound ruff condition, and I paid way more for it than its worth. Probably the norm for an abused bike in my opinion. plastic is fair to poor, motor runs but has had the left center case welded under the shift shaft boss, cutch cover welded where the crank nut spun off and chewed a hole in it, chain junk that explains broken case. swingarm frame pivot holes whallered out. Just took engine out to replace cases, pulled jug and head off. Praying for the best expecting the worst, piston looks like cold seizure exhaust leak combo action. It has a pro x piston and a 1.25 on top of it lol, whats that like 3rd or 4th over? I will never go and look at something I wanna buy in the dark again ever.

so is it an 85 or an 86? it only takes 2 seconds to know which year,,, welded tail light mounts 85.. brake stay on the caliper 85.. sivler motor 86 since the tail light mounts are welded on thats the easy one that usually isn't changed,,, it sounds like a project alright,,, got pictures?

Yep, It has welded TL stays must be an 85. I just updated my sig with the only pic I have right now will take some tomarrow. Someone welded a homemade grab bar to the frame too. I really got myself into a mess on this one.

Ok Best thing to do is Remove the Front fender, Gas tank & shrounds , Rear fender.

Now fill up a bucket of Hot water & add a Heavy Duty cleaner / degreaser.

take a Soft Brush and scrub her down , Finish off with a Pressure washer to remove the tuff stuff.

Spray her down with wd40 to pre-vent rust !

Add some picture see what type of work you need ...

1.25 should = .050 overbore = you have lots of cylinder left.
