The cagiva showed up last night. Cosmetically it is trashed. This morning i pulled it out and started eye balling the unsual stuff on it. Pulled of the rear plastics seat and averything looked to be origial. started to pull the carb off and i noticed the boot had been torn and repaired with fiberglass. The 36mm Delorto was in good shape but a little gummed. the crab is positioned between the shock and pipe. It is a pita to get to. I then checked the coolant. It was full and green. i then checked the trans oil. It wasnt registering. Added some and it poured straight out the bottom. Flipped it over and there was a dime size hole in the bottom of the case. I grabbed my putty and did a quick fix. I then pulled out the drain plug and there was tons of metal shaving and a couple of clips. the bottom end was grenaded. I thought what the hell, filled it with oil. Put gas it in and it finally cranked after about 50 kicks.

This is a very intimidating machine. It vibrates and has the meanest throatiest sound i have ever heard. I wanted to take it for a ride but it doesnt have brakes and the intimidating sound had me nervous. finally convinced my self to go for it. This is a very light machine and is geared relatively high. I never got a chance to get it out of second gear. the power was crisp and with the long rake the front end was easy to keep down. It was a diffrent ride from what i am use to. I know i will need to split the cases, but that will come later. The ergonomics of this wheeler suck. The kickstart is built purposly to break your shin. The shifter is very close to the engine. with boots it would be imposible to shift i thing. Rear brake pedal is the same way. alright, back out to the garage.

I know, i am kinda stuck. It seems to be working fine but i know it is tore up in there. I hate to run it and make it worse, but dont want to pull it apart and try to find parts. i havea long road before i get there anyway. Fixen to pull the mugen build off of the operating table and put the cagiva on there.

Barry, be careful running that cagiva. I had my Tiger 250 running before Bruce and I tore it down, and it ran with a wrong crank in it. Tony in CA said he was amazed that it would run with the wrong crank in it, but it did. And it sounded pretty mean too. Try to not do any more damage than there may already be. I know the temptation is great, especially once you hear it run that first time. That is what is great about the Tigers though. They are so simple and the parts are still available for the most part. I can't imagine what a pain that cagiva is going to be. But I saw that ad after you did and I would have had to buy it. I know it is in good hands though. But you may just want to split those cases to take a look. I'll be keeping a big eye on this build. Best of luck with this trike.

I'd listen to OC when he say not to slipt the cases... Until you've found the gaskets and seals. Bill, I'll scan the manual and get you a copy.... I forgot:wondering

Instead of jumping into it, it's not going to get any worse sitting there, start looking for the parts you'll need. Your starting out on a long road and it'll take you a while just to get the parts needed, then start your rebuild.

It got put up on the operating table last night after i sold the 250r. It will not be ran anymore. i just couldnt resist blazing up and down the road a few times. engine will be yanked and put on the shelf. I have alot of powdercoating and rebuilding to do elsewhere, then just keep my eyes open for parts or maybe get lucky and find a nice bike somewhere to pull from. i will keep everyone posted and i will put up pics with the camera gets found, or we buy another.

I only suggested to split the cases so he could make sure that he wasn't doing any damage by running the trike. He can reassemble the cases using any number of fine products like yamabond to put the cases back together until he can get the parts to do it right. I know how hard it is to get cagiva parts and I also know how hard it is to fight the temptation of running your newest bestest toy. Plenty of people have taken engines apart and put them back together and not used new and fresh gaskets and seals. I'm sure he will do a proper rebuild of the bike as soon as he has the correct parts and is able to do so. It just would have been a very sad day to see him run his cagiva and something internal lock up that he didn't know about without looking.

Yep I ve found most of my motor parts and what I have left can be subsituted with matching up the right seals and bearings but I'll wait a bit longer to see what I can turn up real cagiva stuff.... it took a long time and just happened to find a guy with all the NOS gaskets recently. I have been inspired to put a few hours into the cagiva recently. I need to simply replace about 10 bolts and I have a roller. I have seen several cagivas mx bikes for sale every year. When the right lower hour model shows up with a running motor it will be nice to pick up a spare. I'm setting a deadline.....ROLLER IN 2 WEEKS

I wish some guys would shed some light on this, I mean, 99% of us will never own one so can we get the lowdown?

Gaskets can be made, near any odd sized oil seal can be bought, bearings are standard etc etc. I'd hope (possibly) another clutch friction plate may work??......

Of course the gears, shifter guts and the crank/rod etc etc may be near impossible to find but why is it not recommended to split the case in expectation of gaskets, seals and bearings??

Inquiring minds want to know :D

Opinions on this will vary but to me it's simple, If you have a running cagiva motor why F with it......break something etc.

Also with this cagiva stuff and any other tough restore....patience is key, take it slow.

If you guys didnt know, Cagiva still exsits but under the Husqvarna name after 1988 if I remember right. Anyways what I was getting to is that Husky may have used some or alot of the same parts when on there motors. So you may be able to interchange parts with some of there models. As far as gaskets go if you go into your local graphics or sticker shop with a sheet of gasket material. You can ask them to scan each of your old ones or bring the covers an have them scan those an cut them out like stickers.... Had to have a few made for some of my vintage MX'ers. Good luck great find

Barry,

Here is a motor for you. The listing is wrong and the seller thinks it's an '86 but it isn't, it's a '83 or '84. He says it runs and is complete.

i ended up missing out on that bike. There was a major wreck on the freeway and i got stuck in houston traffic for a few hours. I did find my camera so i will take a bunch of pics tonight. Maybe even a short vid of it running. It is up on the table so i cant take any of it driving.

Quick update. It looks like i have found all of the parts to rebuild my lower end except for a case and whatever might have been damaged. So hopefully i will start working on it shortly. I found a new powder coater yesterday.
