I have an 85 200x. I know its in some dier need of a rebuild. The question is.....
Would it be cheaper to buy all the parts and do it myself and possible screw it up.
Or to buy one of the "fresh rebuild" engines off of ebay for $350???
Right now im not sure exacly what i need for the rebuild. I know obviously i need a gasket kit but thats about it for now. Wont know until i get the motor apart.
What should i do??????????

If you dont know what you are doin, buy another engine.

if you are mechanically inclined, have a manual, and have patients, you could rebuild yourself.if not save your money and buy a complete bolt in motor.

Those motors are fairly simple to overhaul, get a manual, start with all fresh parts. It would be the cheaper thing to do, fresh piston/rings/cylinder hone, probably run you around 200$ or so......
I guess it comes down to how much mechanical experience you have, and if your comfortable enough to do it.
But it is a lot easier to buy a complete fresh running engine :)

What is needed on your engine or what are you looking to do. Those kits with the redone cylinder and new piston and top end gasket kit are not all that bad. If you're picky about your piston and gasket kit, you may want to source your own. Alot of times, if the topend is tired, you may have to have the head redone also. I mean you are talking a 25 plus year old engine. You have to have sources to do the work that are reputable and trustworthy. If your engine is super tired or once you get the topend off and you check your play in the con-rod on your crank, you may want to get that done also, meaning you will have to split the cases. Then you will need all those gaskets and seals and you will have to inspect the tranny gears and do all that. Alot of work, but well worth it if this is your only rider and you will know what all is in it.

i know the basics...ive already had the top end off because the guy who adjusted the valves before i got it didnt tighten one of the adjusting screws enough so i had to fish it out..... im pretty good with motors...and i have the repair manal that i downloaded...so i dont seem to think it would be a problem doing it...
do i doubt my work...a little
im just worried about pullin apart the motor and everythin being completly trashed..
does anyone have a freshly rebuilt motor that runs strong ;) ill ship ya mine and pay some on top of it haha

Buy a NEW engine. It will be cheaper, by a lot. Not to mention NEW.
By the time you get the head redone, add a fresh bore and a new piston kit, gaskets, etc. you'll be around $300. That's not counting a clutch kit, craknkshaft bearings, etc, etc, etc. And you still have an engine with a lot of older parts.
Not mentioning a lot of waiting and a lot of work saved for not much money, maybe cheaper.
Get a new 1, bolt on and go.
Been there, done that. Save your other parts. Even a LIFAN might be better.
It all depends on the condition of your current motor.
Can't beat new.
Just my .02 cents

yea those chinease brands are garbage. but ive been told lifan engines can take a pounding. i was told lifan hangs up there with the japs. just the engines though. the bikes aparently are still junk,
Actually those chinease engines are not bad. the few i have used are extremly dependable, but everything attached to it is garbage.

thats exactly what i said in differint words, lol. i had a lifan 110cc pocket bike.. just about everything had broke on it and was fixed. besides the engine. ran perfect

if your getting one brand new in the box though you need to tighten all the bolts n such yourself. i have heard alot of crap about them comming with loose bolts.

i heard that they have tons of torque compared to most engines there size. mu buddy bought one of there larger 50cc dirt bikes. it was keeping up with a 4 stroke 2003 yamaha ttr 125. we were all shocked to see how much balls the little chinease 50cc had. his is still going strong. frame is run down now though.

what kind of mods need to be done to get this to mount in my 200x frame? i know because of the electric start i need a battery...so where would the battery go?
Lukeatc185
06-19-2009, 01:13 PM
you dont need it, you can kick start it. but if u want the electric start im not sure where you could put the battery :S u might have to redesign a new airbox to fit one. i never seen a 200x up close.

if i have electric start on my motor im gunna use it lol..plus my son doesnt hve enough leg power to start up the bike so the electric start would be a great addition. will my carb and exhaust bolt right up to it?

they put the batteries on the left rear .... they actually made a power up kit for them .... you would have to find one or just make your own not that hard from what i have seen. This place has a harness for $50 a crf 230 side case will allow you to have a forward kick (lifan has a reverse kick)

what place has the harness autoxer

you will need to make a new set of brackets to mount the engine, thats going to be your biggest issue, i have only done a non compatable engine swap one time and we just made a engine craddle with 1.5" pipe, and we just bolted the cradle in place.
Lukeatc185

and im 99.99% sure your carb and exaust will not fit the lifan engine.

PLEASE know what you are saying. These motors have been used by many board members here and they mount easily with stock hardware ..... carb will mount just like the honda because lifan copied honda on the design ... same with the exhaust
being you have a 185 you should easily see the similarity ... the harness is different and as i said it is rear kick so it would be good to have it kick forward for a back up or if you wanted to wait on the battery you could still ride with out having to push a brand new motor trailpro trailpro trailpro

ok...let me sum up what your sayin.....the motor will bolt right up...along with my carb and exhaust. the only things i have to worry about is the wiring harness and kick start? how would i switch it to front kick? could i just swap parts from my current motor to that one?

If I'm not mistaken, you can have the LIFAN with harness and card, kick start and everything you need. I don't think you need a diferent exhaust but I may be wrong. 4 stroke exhaust is easy to fabricate. Make sure you get the OHC engine not the one with the cam on the bottom, those engines suck. but have great torque.

well im not going to argue you have seen a lifan comptatable. but i have seen them NOT, i have seen one bolt up with the front motor mounts but would not line up for the rear mounts. i also have a friend right now running a 150cc lifan, in a 150cc crf, he blew his engine couldint offord a nice honda 150. his exaust bolts lined up but the space to fit the header into did not fit properly. lifan engines are compatable to honda. but you need to pick and choose your lifan engine to what you are using. so please know what you saying pal.

Here you go... It comes in black or aluminum with some bling. If it does not come with wiring harness, you can buy it, cheap...

Pretty sure we are talking 200cc lifan motors I don't know about the 150cc conversions that is why i'm not posting about them shens
I'm not 100% sure on the forward kick conversion so I won't be able to help you there ..... if you research it and figure it out please post it

i do liek rebuilding as then I know that i got, but if i had the $ all at once, i'd go buy a running unit that was in nice shape ratehr than rebuild mine it at this point. why? the time i spend i will not get back and the $ spend to have it done from someone else correctly at this point would be worth it. I just wanna ride now days. I'm starting to tire of rebuilding.
