i aquired a new trike and found many sand like shavings in the oil filter, i tracked it down to the centrificul clutch pad its detereorated badly and thats were all this silt came from, so my main question is do i need to completly tear this thing down to the bare bone, or is this stuff harmless and can be flushed? heres some of the carnage....nasty:confused:http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=i3uy40&s=5

flush it in a parts cleaner the best you can ,, replace the part ,, change the oil after a bit...

look at the bolt holes... that where it came from..

do you think this stuff will eat up the bearings? should i completly tear it down and clean everything? and the highest concentration of it is inside that cover

if most is in that cover,, I would flush the motor, change the filter, and run it.

there was also a nice layer on the clutch cover, the rod bearing feels tight but its stiff i think its loaded up with the mettalic slugde

brake cleaner or dropping them in gasoline and using compressed air is a good way to go, just be sure to lubricate them after, clutch pads are made to wear down vs metal, so the dust n stuff and peices from your clutch pads wont cause much if any wear on the metal.

has anyone had this happen to them? i need to hear from someone with real experience i can't put it back together and find out the bearings have worn to dust

and this is on the centrifigul clutch btw are there supposed to be pads there? maybe thats where all the sludge is from?

metal shavings are going to tear the inside of your engine apart unless there completely gone, i was refering to the clutch pad dust u said it was deteriated. the clutch pad material wont hurt anything it will wear down vs metal not the other way around. but metal shavings will mess trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro up. completely clean it out if u see metal shaving.

yea i don't know why all this mettalic sludge would build up in there nothing is rubbing it seems, in the manual its says its an oil filter cover

inside the cover like in the picture though, are those just detereorating clutch pads?

to me in the picture it just looks like a build up of oil/clutch pad dust. i cant see any metal shards. the shine is just the reflection of the clutch pad material.

good news opened up another 200 motor and found it collects the centrifigul clutch dust on that plate, so happy i won't have to split cases for now, the rod bearing feels a bit rough but its just running on oil with the dust in it

I have rebuilt 3 200s centrifigul clutchs and everyone has had that in there, like everyone said just clean as much as you can and change the oil a few times but no harm done. also replace the centrifigul clutch drum its like 110 bucks and makes all the work worth while, new clutch pads and drum and your good to go!
