My nephew brought me a 86' Honda 200x with manual transmission. He stated it was stuck in 2nd gear and would not shift. After riding it I determined it was stuck in either 2nd or 3rd gear but more than likely 2nd. Having not ever worked on one of these I removed the transmisson side cover and looked for anything obvious. With nothing obvious found I am lost at this point. One thing that stood out was there is a chain on 1 of the gears that has quite a bit of slack in it, other than that nothing. Can anybody lead me in the right direction? I have downloaded the service manuals so at least I will have some idea of what the parts are.

thanks
Cooper

I bought a 125m that was "stuck in gear" according to the po. Turns out it was just that he had slung the chain and it was all bunched up around the front sprocket. Once I fixed that mess it seemed to work ok except that 3rd gear was crunchy. I'm guessing something got jacked up when he came to a sudden stop when the chain slung lol.

Hey Coop,

WELCOME ABOARD!!

Don't worry about the chain, the oil pump chain has a bit of slack. BUT, if your missing the side plate, something bad will happen to Mr. Chain.....

Get the shift shaft out and then mess with the star wheel. Jack it up, use the rear wheels to drive everything and index the star wheel with channel locks or something. If it runs thru the gears fine, you have an issue with all those silly plates, pawls and other EXTERNAL shift goodies.

The clutch will have to come off and you'll see the stupid 4 prong nut. Get a 15/16th socket and start grinding away and you'll have a tool that works great for allot of Honda "guts" issues.

The 86/87 have some issues with the "gear shifter plate" and it is discontinued :(, that MAY be the issue as I hope it is NOT inside the case. Used parts can be found just fine....

If it is an 87 tranny, 3rd gear is known to go bad and that could also be the issue. I'm betting on an 86 tranny with an easy external issue myself :D

Good luck and let us know
