I have owned two with gun racks. one was a 200m and the other was a yt175. they were just an universal type rack that mounted to the forks. let me see if i can find a pic.

I have a pic of the 175 on this thread. You can kinda see it a bit. If i remember correctly it was just an academy atv gun rack that he welded a metal plate onto it. Bolted to the bars.

That's what I want to do.
My rear rack fills up with gear pretty fast for a weekend trip; strapping my 12 gauge to the gear does me no good if a bear/zombie/whatever shows up quickly. I don't want to mount it to the very back of the rack; I don't want to turn to get the shotgun and my tires throw a whole lot of mud on everything back there. I don't think I want to go across the handlebars; I lean and pull the handlebars from all directions, and I don't want the extra weight up there. I also tried along side the machine and up a rear fender, but it got in the way of my leg and wasn't an easy draw.

I need something that will protect the shotgun from water, impact, and still provide an easy draw. I think I could make my own case/sheath out of steel tubing. A small tube for the barrel; a larger piece for the receiver and stock. (my stock folds over the top of the receiver) Maybe flat steel with tube on each side to make an oval shape. I'd make it as small as possible, just big enough to fit my shotgun. I'd mount some rubber pieces inside to cradle the shotgun. Only the buttstock end would be open; when mounted down the right hand fork it would be easy to draw. Remember on the SX that you won't be able to mount anything below the lower triple. Since I am making my own front rack also, I will use that as a mounting point with another mount off the handlebars for extra support. I plan on having it mounted with just the pistol grip above the level of the handlebars. With my short shotgun it shouldn't hang below the front axle. To keep dirt, water and the elements out, I can put a flange around the top that will hold a fabric (marine grade vinyl probably) cover with elastic on the lower edge. A drain hole with plug on the bottom of the case would be a good addition too.

I have to decide if I'm going to put a tactical light on the shotgun before I do all this work. Y'know, for bears!

I'm still a few months from working on this; I'm eager to see what you came up with!

I have an M240H assigned to me right now. I think it would have an effect on the steering!

my 82 BR came with a gunrack that mounted to the strut top bolts where the handle bars mount botls to the struts on top. (sorta like a "Tree"). i will never use it. you can have it. it looks like a home brewed one.

Google Images led me to this one...

It's sorta like what I want to make. I want mine to be slimmer, higher off the ground and have a whole lot less fabric up top.

You can just mount those on your handle bars instead of rack. I dont have any pics but I have them mounted on the handlebars of my rancher.
