View Full Version : Southern Ontario Trikers - The Pits Ride

Hey folks, after having a great ride at the Ganaraska forest last weekend, my brother and I are hoping we can plan another ride together.
Aiming for Saturday July 25th.
A meeting time around 10am worked good before, so would like to stick with that time.
Starting Location:
Our house, 1.5hrs east of toronto about 15 minutes north once off the 401. From hwy 7, we're located 25mins south of Marmora. I will post a map.
Game Plan:
Meet at our house and park at the bottom of the yard(lots of space). Once everyone's here, we'll leave for an unused sand/gravel pit which is very large and has lots of various riding environments. A wooded trail will take us to another area where many sand hills are found of difference difficulty. It would be easy to spend a good 3 hours in this area without getting bored.
After everyone's had enough of this place we can travel back to our place, refueling bikes and bodies ie: BBQ.
Next we could take off in the other direction where another unused sand pit is found.. from there we can access the old rail bed. Traveling north, will bring us to the town of Stirling (where we can legally ride the roads!) after cruising around, and/or getting snacks we can continue on the tracks North to the town of Harold. Here we will find an unused Quarry which has turned into a local swimming hotspot, and is second to none to take a swim or cool down.
Depending on the time, and tired bodies a decision to go further to another riding area, or trek the tracks back would be made.
Here are a couple pics of a small bit of the area we could cover:

I'm in, should I bring the paddle tires or are the pits more gravel than sand?
toomeysheele
07-01-2009, 09:09 PM
The one area has alot of sand, but getting there would wear your paddles out in a quick hurry..and there are more dirt hills than sand i think anyways. you'll be good with your dirt treads on ; )
Rosco, perhaps we'll try to do it again a few weeks later so you and Shannon can make it out, enjoy Hawaii, should be a sweet vacation.

I'll have to join you guys for the next one as well - as much as I'd love to join you guys this time I have a cottage rented for that weekend :( My entire July is pretty much a write-off for ATC'ing unfortunately, but hopefully I can make up for it in August!
Have a blast, take lots of pictures, and keep me posted for the next one!

I'm not sure if I can make it as of now. I want to rebuild the top end on the X and get a couple of soft rides in before I hit the trails hard again. It does look like a sweet place to ride!

Wow, talk about pickin a bad date as far as other rider availability, hope everyone can make it out in August.
Tapper- she seemed to be running pretty strong, that motor hasnt been cracked open before I'm assuming?
tapper190
07-03-2009, 01:34 PM
I've had it open to many times lately . I threw the rod bearing out in April. Got a different bottom end from a great board member. I was going to run this motor for the summer and build another motor over the winter. This one smokes worst than a 2 stroke untill it gets warm. I don't trust it, also I don't want to be the hold up when we go riding!

07-03-2009, 03:15 PM
jeeze.. thats pretty brutal, hows the compression? I dont recall you having a problem getting it started? perhaps the valves just need some adjustment...:wondering
If it came to be the hold up I'm sure the sleeping 350x in our garage would have to snap out of it and make an appearance... as long as you were comfortable with the twist throttle that some nutbar put on it ;)
tapper190
07-04-2009, 06:46 AM
When I had it apart before the rod bearing went I was on the boarder line for the piston ring gap clearance. I had already dumped a pile of money into the trike and my wife was getting a little upset about the money, so I left it.
The valve adjustment wouldn't correct the oil usage or the blue haze at start up. Thanks for the offer on the other 350x, you should be riding that one instead of that thing with four wheels  ( which is a very nice machine!)
I'm on the fence about going, I have all the parts, I just need to find the time to do it and the break in. I'll keep you posted on how I'm making out. I'm going to try and pull the motor before I leave for Winsdor this afternoon.

PITS RIDE Officially August 22nd.
For White Rat, and Myles & company, my bro and I are still planning to get out on the 25th of this month, so if you guys can make it out for a pre ride to the bigger one in August that would still be awesome.
toomeysheele
07-08-2009, 09:19 PM
Insurance and plates would be strongly recommended.. Otherwise you`d risk being charged in Stirling and perhaps even on the old rail line.. It`s your call, but I dont think I`d want to take the risk.. In a group of 10 or so people running from the cops isn't much of an option.. and certainly not a wise one..

I have the motor out now, took the top end off and have the new piston installed and ready for the head! I want to clean the head up a bit before it goes on. I might just make it for the July ride after all! Hopefully, I'll start the break-in this Sunday!

Count me in for August 22nd!!!
Having a bit of troubles with the 250R right now... it started to sputter, then died last weekend, and I have been unable to start it since. It's at my parent's farm near London right now, so I can't work on it until I get back there again - but I plan to change the spark plug and clean the carb and hope it's an easy fix.
I should have it running by the end of August, but worst case scenario I'll join you guys on 2 wheels instead of 3...
CAN'T WAIT!
toomeysheele
07-09-2009, 04:00 PM
Great to hear that you'll be able to join us either way B.J..
If you haven't gave the air filter good maintenance after that dusty Gan ride, chances are its nothing more than a dirty carb... my brothers trike had dirt build up in the intake tube that passed through the filter... Slightly unnerving.. good thing they're tough motors ; )

Camping overnight is an option for anyone who's not really interested in the trek home after a long day of riding.
There is a great place to grab breakfast with extremely reasonable prices that we would be able to ride to in the morning.
And of course there is areas that we wouldn't have been able to get to the first day, so for any die hards, this could be a 2 or at least a day and 1/2 event..:w00t:

NICE trike Turtles!!! Can't wait to see it in action - that should definitely be a smoother ride than what you've been used to ;)
MAN, I'm feeling bummed to miss the July ride - I hope your offer to camp extends to the August ride - I'd definitely be down for a 2 day adventure. I'm sure bit (aka mike the tour guide) would like to join as well if you don't mind those pesky 2 wheeled machines tagging along ;)

Beauty trike Turtles! that will surely be a worthwhile upgrade ;)
And Bj, that offer most definitely is for both rides, and our pals on 2 wheels are more than welcome to attend. I was thinking about PM'ing Mike on here, but noticed he hasn't responded to this topic at all, so if your in contact with him that is great.

Thanks guys it is going to be a nice smoother upgrade for sure. It needs the plastic replaced. And maybe a muffler just a bit loud for me. Will do that in the winter. I sent mike a pm saying that if he wanted to go i would figure out some way of getting his bike down there.

Great job Turtles, where did you find that one? I haven't seen to many '86 around for a decent price. I think you will really enjoy that one. Great to hear you'll be able to make it out in August, we'll definitely have a nice sized group and it will surely be a riot.
It certainly won't be sand all day either, mostly hard pack dirt, some sand, and some paved surfaces, so as far as that goes, I hope you don't tip it over too much.. or at least not on the latter surface mentioned..

Yes it was a great day to ride. Rained on the way home which was good all the dirt was washed off of it. See you next ride

Thanks again for the great day! It was well worth the three and a half hour drive one way! About 15 mins from your house, it started to rain and it rained almost all the way home. I think the second spot we hit was the best one, even though that one hill (mountain, ) took a hit on my pride of climbing! Great job '86 350x for making it to the top! and remind me next time not to follow you when you are hill climbing, Can wait to check out the other spots you guy's mentioned.
toomeysheele, you are one crazy mother on that banshee! I know of a perfect riding partner for you, wideopen (seantrx250r), you guys would be perfect together!
Even though someone had to grow an extra wheel in the afternoon, and then turtles and I were out numbered, I will ride with you guys anytime! I think Doug from Ottawa should start looking for a 250r and join the three wheeler club!

Hey Xhumeka, yes the 22nd and 23rd of August still seem like the good dates for the ride I'll put a new post in this section of the forums shortly.
I just hope we get some rain on the Friday like we had for the past weekend, made for awesome riding without the dust. Can't wait for the big gathering, and for those who made it out the past weekend we can throw another pit into the mix so its not the same ole scenery.

Xhumeka it was amazing. Smooth and lots of power, made it up the hills no problem. Just need to quite down the exhaust a bit.
