Is there any difference between the 84 and the 85 forks for the Tecates other then paint color? Is the length, size, etc all the same? Will the 84 fit a 85 triple tree set-up or vice versa?

Yes, the triple trees are the same as are the fork tubes and insides. The lowers themselves are the only difference that I noticed taking them apart. My 84 now has 84 tubes and 85 fork lowers. The 84 had fork boots and seals while the 85 came stock with no fork boots but had a wiper at the top of the fork lower that protected the fork seal. My other 85 now has an 84 front end in the 85 triples.

The fork lowers are completely different between 84 and 85 for the different brake setups. drum for 84 and disc for 85

The 84 had different upper tree handlebar mounts than the 85! They will both work together, but visibly they are different!

the lower fork tubes on the 84 have a prong protruding out of the tube on the left side (sitting on the bike) where the front drum attaches to to hold it in place and stop it from moving when applying the brake, the 85 has two bolt holes that the caliper bolts upto. cant use an 84 lower fork tube on the 85 and vice versa.... nuff said.

Slightly OT, but what paint do you use to recon the gold forks, swingarms, and wheels on the red ones? Or is it anodized?

It's just paint, and I don't have any idea what color it is.
