Hey everyone, I'm also a new Tecate owner here. its an 84, the previous owner HAD a ton of work done to it and then it sat in the back of his grandma's backyard. well, i picked it up cheap and just going thru it. I remember watching this bike beat EVERY honda 250r AND 350x!! I need help on 2 major areas #1, where can i get a petcock? and #2, anybody know how to pull off the flywheel? i've seen petcocks for like $40 or so, is that a good deal? also have seen 'universal flywheel puller' on ebay (center hole and 3 long slots), would this work on my tecate? Thank You all in advance for your help & thanks for having me in your group. God Bless Mike
You can use a Banshee petcock. They are cheaper. Or you can get a petcock rebuild kit off of ebay. As for the flywheel my Tecate manual shows a special puller to remove it, but I don't see why a regular puller wouldn't work. You will need bolts that will thread into the flywheel though.
u can barrow 1 from autozone just have to get the right bolts. you can buy 1 for 20 dollars or less . petcocks ? many will work. depending on the inlet size for the fuel line. you will have to determine what petcock to buy . big carbs u can use differt dirt bikes like the yz250s smaller tt125. 15 dollars new
dcreel, so the center bolt threads into the flywheel? now if i pull the flywheel bolt out, that would be the same bolt and thread size i would need? probably just a longer bolt im assuming.
I don't think that the center bolt threads into it, it just pushes into it creating leverage to pop it loose.
I highly recommend this puller. I have used it to get a few flywheels off. Like dcreel said, the center bolt pushes on the actual flywheel bolt, which should be loosened a few turns before you attach the puller. You will need to go to the hardware store and get 3 bolts and washers to attach the puller to the flywheel. I can't remember off the top of my head what the size and thread pitch was. Just be careful not to thread the 3 bolts onto the flywheel too deep, as this can damage the lighting and ignition coils. Oh yeah, and whatever you do, do not bang on the flywheel with anything. It will destroy the magnets inside and render the flywheel useless. That is of course assuming you want to save it. If not then bang away! A couple of sharp cracks with a and it will fall right off, no need for a puller. Be careful not to lose the woodruff key that is on the crankshaft. I hope this is of some help to you mctnez13. Cheers
thanks taiterator and dcreel! i hope this thing comes off. unfortunately, i did use a rubber mallet around the flywheel, but just to loosen in up, also used PB blaster on the woodruf key. i will keep everyone posted. also purchased a banshee petcock, should work. am i going to need to file the petcock opening on the fuel tank a bit for this to fix/work? thanks to all, i know my bike looks like a piece of junk, so thanks for taking this serious, i need the advice. trying to build a 'sleeper' bike anyway. LOL
If you want to keep your stock petcock the local Kawasaki dealer should have rebuild kits for it. I think they are are around $15. But you cant go wrong with new one for $20. Why do you want to take the flywheel off? No spark? Everyone in this group can tell you the magnets let loose and take out the stator. If you need a new ignition system you can use the old kx250 dirt bike system (no lights though). a rickey stator and fly wheel (i would buy the coils and soldier them on the stock plate because the rickey stator plates don't have timing marks), or you can spend some bucks and get a PVL ignition. Good luck with it. Seems like more and more people are getting Tecates.
