ive been doing some research and im looking for definitive answers here... i just picked up a 68 t3 and the back shock is trashed im going to send it to a buddy to see if it can be rebuilt ... but my guess is the p.o. ran it for quite some time with no oil.... so in the event that it is not salvageable... what other options do i have.. i want to retain my airbox..so i can look for another good 86 shock... what about the 85 t3 or 87 t4 shocks will they work... and beyond that what is some other options for me....

I believe a 300ex shock will work with the stock airbox.

Just about all of this info should be relevant to the second gen Tecate. I have a 300EX shock in mine, but it's a bit stiff for sure.

If it is rebuildable I would call Dave Roberts at IRL Performance (http://www.ilrperformance.com/home). He rebuilt mine and he said the 86-87 units were very good right from the factory but the 84-85 and the T-4's were very limited. He should know also, since he's a former Team Green mechanic from back in the heyday!

I guess I need to speak up here as I think I am the only one running a LT250R rear shock. Now that I have some ride time on it I can give better advice- Get an LT shock (85-90)! They are way more abundant and cheap. They look nearly the same and the LT is only very slightly larger in OD- the springs interchange also. The extra stroke of the LT shock combined with my +4 swingarm adds up to 13''+ of travel!!!! Its awesome! I rode the dunes two weeks ago and gave it a beating with some 5th gear whoop road use! I had my mystery spring preload set about in the middle and I was using all the travel but no harsh bottoming or severe rebound kick- pretty smooth sailing.

I can still say however, it is pretty soft, both on compression and rebound. (I weigh 200lbs) I currently have both settings on their max. The next time I have it out I will swap to some heavier oil as I think I used some 5w but I cant remember. Or maybe take it to a pro and have them set it up............. or better yet buy a Works Performance shock for an LT! Still for an experiment and me having never rebuilt a shock before I couldn't be happier!
