Most noticeable is the hubs and the front braking system. The light and kill switch changed from one unit 84 to 2 separate push button units 85 The Cdi's are different the 85's is bigger and I have heard that it allows more revs The calipers are different the 85's are bigger and heavier duty. The rear shock on the 85 has an adjustable over flow bottle the 84 shock only adjusts the shock it self. (the 85 also has the 84 adjustments) The swing arms are different the 85 has additional supports welded in between the shock mount and the axle carrier. The support bar that runs above the rear shock linkage is all tubular on the 84 the 85 is flat on the side under the seat. The foot pegs are different the 84 pegs are square the 85 are rounded and have a support welded in them The wheels are aluminum on the 85 and steel on the 84 There is timing differences between them. The 85 is lighter than the 84 Any other differences?
Upper tripple is different, shift petals are different, clutches an shift mechanisms are different, frame has additional gusseting in 85. Rear suspension dog bones are different length for 84-85, and upper pivot is different too. Carriers do not interchange, unless correct caliper is used. There were many fastener changes between the 2 years. 85 cyls are faster than 84's....(stock) Carbs and exhaust were different to., But they are usually junk by now, so it's meaningless.
Fork lowers are different between 84 and 85
Is there a way to tell the cylinders apart?
