Check your compression, make sure your choke isn't sticking. also make sure your jetting is correct and replace your spark plug. Tune your carburator too. Oil your chain, and make sure your brakes are rubbing. If your chain is too tight it won't roll easy, and puts wear on bearings
Before i tore my '82 down a week ago i clocked it at 64 mph, and thats with a 34mm carb, pod filter, and a dg silencer. I'll repost after i get it back together what my speed is
i drag race my 2nd gen and ive been clocked in at 84 and 82mph on sand many of times.. gear it right and get some parts like bigcarb reeds pipe and some fine tuning($$in the motor). u can bring the life out of yr old r..
Riding side by side with a car is really inaccurate. Speedos are not accurate and are usually high to actual speed. The easiest way these days is using a gps. I tested out my 83R at 58mph on pavement. It only upgrade is DG pipe. The jetting is rich. Speaking of gearing, my Tri-z tested at 55mph with 18in tires and stock gearing. I regeared for closer to stock overall ratio and now it goes 65mph.
