Hello, both my 1985 and 1982 ATC 110 seem to have transmission issues. They sometimes slip out of gear and go into in-between neutral. Down or upshift again and it comes back out, but is there any way to fix this? Occasionally you'll also hear a clicking noise as if it's trying to catch something internally. On top of that, my 1985 has a tough time with shifting ranges. The range lever is very tough, is it supposed to be this way? Mind you it has unfortunately sat outside in a yard until I rescued it! So rust may be a factor here.
    Thanks!

The shift drum stopper was broken on my ATC110. My transmission exhibited the same problems you are describing. It was fairly easy to replace the stopper because the transmission does not need to be disassembled.

Your shift drum stopper may have broken. This is a common weak point on the 90 and 110 engine. Honda redesigned the stopper to make it thicker/stronger to prevent breakage.

The shift drum rotates to move the shifting fork(s) which engage/disengage the gears. The stopper holds the shift drum at the precise degree of drum rotation to maintain gear engagement. If the stopper breaks then the drum is not held steady and the transmission can jump out of gear or not go completely into gear.

Remove the right-hand engine cover to inspect the shift drum stopper. It looks like a steel plate with a little roller on its end. The plate can break in half. It's obvious to identify a broken shift drum stopper.
