    Valve Adjustment Question

    I recently rebuilt my motor and had a very annoyingly loud clicking noise from the top end. I adjusted the valves to the web cam specs of .004 on the intake and exhaust and the noise went away. I now have an issue with the bike revving, it seems that it does not want to rev higher than about half throttle. Once it tries to go above half throttle it seems like it will either sputter or stay at the same rpm. Should I back these valves off to .005??? I don't understand why this is an issue since they are adjusted to spec . Any info would be great. Thanks in advance guys.

    sounds like a carb problem.
    Looking for some smaller style tires like the r's have, just 2 back tires. pm please.

    You think its too lean or rich?? I'm going to guess it's the main jet because if I'm not mistaken isn't the needle clip in control of the mid range, pilot jet for low end, and main jet for WOT?

    valves

    did you say the engine ran good before you adjusted the valves to .004?

    Seemed like it ran great before the valves were adjusted. They were way out of adjustment which caused the loud clicking noise I had. I just turned the bike off after letting it idle for about 10 minutes and the motor seems much hotter than it usually gets. I think I'm pretty lean on my main jet.

    if the valves were that far out and you never touched the valve setup or rebuilt the head, id be worried about a timing issue.

    Ive done a top end on my 200s and after a new piston and rings, the head went back on fine and the valves were almost still dead nuts.

    If you took the head all apart and lapped the valves or installed new ones with springs/seals/etc then i could see them being that far out, but id just double check the timing before i proceeded.

    What trike is it? A clean carb cant hurt either.

    Why did you rebuild the motor? WHat happened? Since you put a webcam in there, the carb could be more likely then. Did you adjust jetting? I missed that in the first post the first time.

    If your carb hasn't already been rejeted then you need to up the main and raise the needle.
    The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person who is doing it.

    It is correctly timed because when I line up the "T" mark on the flywheel the piston is exactly at TDC. This is a 85' 350x fyi. I took the valves out to replace the valve seals but it should not have affected anything. I am going to lower the needle clip a notch and see if it helps out any and re-check the valve clearance to see if they are still set to .004 in. If I cannot get this to run right I am going to buy the parts to put this motor back to bone stock. I just want a daily trail rider I can depend on. Oh yeah, can anyone explain to me why main jets from local honda shops are $20.00 apiece???? I want to know who actually pays that kind of money for something that small

    Jetting is not my problem, want to know what is??? My timing has jumped to where the "F" mark lines up with the timing hole when the piston is completely TDC... I did not confuse these two marks when I rebuilt the motor, I think my stretched out old timing chain must have had something to do with it. Do you guys think this is what is causing my bike to run weird? I guess it's time to put that new timing chain on that I got in the mail today.

    Yeah they are insanely high on everything else as well... It's such a drag to live in an area where all the honda dealers are so expensive.

    That would do it! When I rebuilt my 200x I had everything together perfect. Spot on timing was right, new chain, cam guides and tensioner. After a few hours of breakin I never re-tightened the cam chain and it jumped time. I then went to adjust the valves as a post break in deal and things were way off when I went to adjust them, I was confused at this as it still ran ok. After I adjusted things ran like poo, so I went through it re checked timing marks and it was about 3 teeth off... This would cause a problem. Re-time everything and we have been good to go ever since. Keep your cam chain tight, I learned this lesson thankfully it wasn't worse by bending a bunch of valves.
