    85 250r kickstart mechanism

I have an 85 250R with a kicker that it starting to slip. ever now and again I will feel it pop or slip a tooth when kicking. I have not yet taken it apart to see which gear is having issues, but If I had to guess I would think the ratchet gears are the source of the problem. Looking at the repair manual it seems that honda slightly altered the kickstarter in these motors in 86. I am sure it will keep working for a little while, and I want to get an entire assembly before I pull the motor apart. Will the shafts and kicker gears from 86+ trx's and the 86 atc work in my 85 and is there an advantage in installing one from a later model?

Check over at bikebandit.com for the two models you listed, and see if the part numbers are the same. If not, my guess is it would be different, and not work.

The 85's were known to fail, I believe there was a change to something in the gear design somewhere either late 85 or 86 and up, TRX also.

I'm fairly sure that the 85-89 all change, the later years something changed with the spacer/washer arrangement but It was still the same length spacer. I think they changed to a long spacer from a spacer with 2 thrust washers, I don't see why the change though.

I honestly forget - Mosh knows though.......

The 85 I had slipped and to be honest, I was kinda upset when I got the new gears. I really thought I'd see a pretty sharp edge on the teeth but direct from Honda, the teeth still appear rounded. But, they did fix the issue.

I think I still have a set of gears, spacers and the shaft from a crate motor, they were installed but not used. The guy wanted 500$ for the crate motor but ended up parting it out. Email me if you are interested - ATCST@Verizon.net
